Greed is a hunger that knows no
satisfaction. It corrupts the inno
cence of youth by turning it inside
out. The ravage of greed is the
cause of many evils and the ruina-
tion of many a respectable band.
It is the reason why so many once
great groups go on to play the
meaningless dribble that finally
makes it on the airwaves. Sure,
you can pretend to not care about
money in an image of clothes torn
by your fashion designers, but in
the end, the cash tendered is your
only concern... With the song
"Step Down" from Scratch The
Surface, Sick Of It All addresses
bands who pretend they're hard-
core. Vocalist Lou Koller explains,
"A lot of times you go see hard-
core bands and it costs like twen-
ty dollars to get in and twenty dol-
lars for a t-shirt, and that's bullshit,
that's not hardcore. If they were
really into hardcore they'd be try-
ing to keep it even.
We're not against
making money, but
we're against ripping
off the kids who are
the whole reason
you're there in the
first place." Mean-
while, the ever vigor-
ous New York under-
ground is alive and
kicking. Says Lou, "It Wise

again. You've got

Train Jack. For them that dig
weirded out vocals where the
singer sounds like he's on serious
downers comin' out of the rubber
room, The Fuck Emos' Can Kill
You definitely fits the bill. "The
Screams of Wild Women," "2
Punk 2 Fuck" and "Putrid Human
Waste" shed a slant of light on the
disturbed minds of these fishy fel-
lows... Treepeople are back on
the attack with Actual Re-enact-
ment, a fuzzy, freaky journey out-
side the realms of grunge where
few trendoids dare to tread...
Stop the presses, this just in from
East Coast reporter Ken Salerno:
"It was billed as a Shelter show
but the buzz was about and every-
one seemed to
know the shit
was hittin' the
fan. After their
regular set, the
crowd was just
totally primed,
and Walter of
Quicksand took
the stage, com-
pleting the orig-
inal line-up for
Youth of Today.
From then on it
was like days of

yore. Everyone
bum-rushed
the stage and
it was just total
pandemonium.
Actually, it was
like the old days, but most of this
crowd was still shittin' in their
pants back then... No butts
about it, there's nothing quite as
big as Texass, a souped-up turbo
booty punk combo with enough
crunch in their drawers to leave
nothin' but burnin' smoke... Then
there's The Wise Monkey Orch-
estra from the desert wastelands
of Phoenix. A funky sub-woofer
groove à la AZ pool skater Chad
Stewart sets the pace on Time
Capsule for a dreamy medley of
exoticism driven by the heady
female voice of Alley and punctu-
ated by a synchopated horn sec-
tion. However many times you
hear warnings about AIDS, it'll
never sound as good as when it's
said by Digable Planets, Herbie
Hancock, Me'shell NdegéOcello,
MC Solaar, Guru, Spearhead,
Incognito, The Pharcyde, Donald
Byrd, Branford Marsalis, Bernie
Worrell and The Roots on Stolen
Moments: Red Hot & Cool... And
when you grasp the importance of
safe sex and have somebody to
love, slip into Red Hot On Impulse
with Pharoah Sanders, Alice Col-
trane, Oliver Nelson, Max Roach,
John Coltrane, Archie Shepp and
Charles Mingus. -Brian Brannon
