It's always easier to talk shit than
to come up with something original
so a lot of rappers have stuck their
hands in the pocket of the gangs-
ta rap empire and tried to pull out
a little something for themselves. If
that's what you have to do to suc-
ceed in the rap industry, then Milk's
career will be fucked-up because
that's just not his style.
Milk aims to make the ultimate
b-boy record. To him that means it
has to be inventive, aggressive and
drum-heavy. "I don't think a b-boy
record is bitch-bitch-kill-kill," he
74 THR
explains. "I don't really believe in
that, and I have never done that.
before. You get scared that what
you do isn't the current trend, but I
decided that doesn't matter to me.
I just want to do what I do."
What Milk does is a throwback to
the early eighties sound when rap
was first beginning to take-off. He
thinks Run-DMC is the greatest rap
group ever, loves the Beastie Boys
(and teams up with Ad-Rock for the
cut "Spam" off Never Dated), and
when shopping his deal, Milk made
Rick Rubin commit to producing at
least one cut on each album so that
he'd be sure to get the sound that
he wanted to emulate. Milk's voice
is so tense and so high that you're
sure he's going to lose it before the
rhyme is done-which he says fre-
quently happens when he performs
live, "I get real amped when I per-
form and I lose my voice. It gets
even higher than on the record."
Milk's family seems to breed rap-
pers. His sister is MC Lyte and his
brother Gizmo was his former part-
ner in Audio Two. His father man-
ages all of them. Milk's early hit sin
gle "Top Billin"" is probably one of
the most sampled hip-hop songs
ever. He takes that as the biggest
compliment possible. When you
hear your music sampled you know
you've left your mark. As Milk puts
it, "My stuff-you either love it or
you hate it, but please don't just
like it. When I do a song I want you
to get a radical emotion from it-
either love it to death or hate it,
but please don't just like it, 'cause
to me music is about being more
extreme than that."
