Everybody's got an
opinion as to what
was the best and worst to
come out of any particular year,
and when you come right down to
it, who really gives a shit what
someone else's top bands were?
Not us. That's why we decided to
name our awards the Top
Discoveries of 1994, that way if
you like something better, maybe
it's just because we haven't
discovered it yet.
TOP 12 DISCOVERIES OF '94

1. Johnny Cash.
2. The Village People were gay!?
3. Extra spicy Bloody Marys.
4. Ska does suck-still.
5. Shane MacGowan really is the
ugliest man alive.
6. Shooting ranges rock.
7. I really can't skate-I've realized.
8. St Vitus Dance.

LUCKY 13 FOR '94
by Rick Rotsaert
1. Godflesh, Selfless. Returning to
their "Streetcleaner" roots and
roughness, put the jolt back in me.
2. Guided By Voices,
Bee Thousand.
Brothers Pollard
and
Top Discoveries of 1994
crew evoke on a magical mystery
tour of true improv pop. This shit
is catchy as fuck.
3. Slag, American Fuck. Just plain
outta nowhere fuzzed-out rockfest
where you say to yourself, "What
the fuck is this?" Then you put it
on and end up telling all your buds
about it.
4. Teengenerate
all releases.
This is what American Soul
Spiders turned into and it really
worked. Japanese garage punk
fun at its best.
5. Disrupt, Unrest. No one can live
without this Disrupt blends all
early 80s derivatives with a
Discharge base of attack. The CD
includes their premiere 7" EP.
6. The Mermen, Food For Other
Fish. This SF based trio really pulls
the wool with their astonishing
playing ability and songwriting tac-
tics, mixing psychedelic treats and
traditional surf sounds.
7. Godheadsilo, The Scientific
Supercake. From Washington
State comes a god of magnani-
mous proportions. Rumbling,
vibrating feedback-ridden lulla
bies in low gear. This is simply
crushing.
8. Terminal Cheesecake,
King Of All Spaceheads.
These guys have been around a
while, but this is truly their best
yet. TC has evolved technology
wise and for the
better. The new
album blends
tribal
beats along with some inspiring
guitar work and synth genius. I lis-
ten to it all the time.
9. Slug. The Out Sound. Slug is
from So Cal and have a sound all
their own. It's punk for the now
generation.
10. Scorn, Evanescence. The grue-
some twosome from England pro-
duce yet another classic.
Evanescence takes a pure techno
turn from previously more guitar
heavy manifests. Progression has
led them to almost soundtrack-like
creations
11. Sepultura, Chaos AD. The
undefeatable Brazilian metal
machine will never die. Chaos AD
lets even the most clueless know
what's up.
12. Slayer, Divine Intervention. Put
all of Slayer's albums together, and
this is what you get: Totally forti
fied aggression.
13. Blade Runner/Vangelis
Soundtrack Finally the unequivo-
cal and most popular soundtrack
among the sci-fi community is here
and now featuring Vangelis' origi-
nal score with unreleased
material
appearing for the first time on this
disc. Also includes lines from the
movie dubbed in for that added
stimulation
MEMORABLE MOMENTS
by Brian Brannon
1. It's All Right by the Cadillac
Tramps stands the test of all-time.
2. Slag, American Fuck. Not only
dices, the cover art is also a rip-off
of Don McLean's American Pie.
3. Tom Jones definitely still has it,
as evidenced by The Lead And
How To Swing It.
4. When it comes to frontside roll-
ins or really anything else in life,
there comes a point where you
either go for it or go away from it.
5. The Ketchup And Mustard Man
by The Billy Nayer Show is a far-
out and funny multi-timbral cine-
matic experience.
6. Gil-Scott Heron and Amnesia
Express have chops for years.
7. The bass player who wears the
indian get-up in George Clinton's
band is bad as fuck.
8. Rancid's punk rockitude has a
rallying effect on the youth.
9. War is forever. Anthology '70-94
proves that the beat goes on.
