They came, they saw, they conquered.
Mike Carroll illustrates the anatomy of an

In clandestine pursuit of a professional skateboarder
known as James "Wade" Speyer, I stepped aboard a long and turbu
lent flight across the Atlantic. My objective: To seize a pair of his socks
for my employer's analysis. For the past year, Wade has been secretly test-
ing active compounds in athletic knee-highs for a rival sporting goods com-
pany. These ingredients, when meshed with cotton. enable the sock to
remain upright during an entire day of sports activity. My failure
to secure a pair would not only mean a great loss for my
employer, but the loss of my own job as well.
The plane touched down in London
seven in the morning. I cautiously

on the subway across the city. M
With their backpacks full of equipment, they
transferred trains and stank up each car that carried
commuters in the hot summer morning. Many of the
Londoners gazed at these skaters in bewilderment as
they quickly returned gestures with sweaty grins.
