On The Road
NO VACANCY IN VEGA$
The idea of going to Las Vegas on a whim was fine by me. Even though the day-
time temperatures reach the low hundreds, I was confident enough in my heart with
the dynamic duo of Andy Roy and Ruben Orkin to make the trek. We had heard tales
of pools, hips and spots that had to be fact-checked. Upon arrival in the blistering
mid-day sun, we found that our hook-up had just left town for a month. Killer. So
that left us to our own resources to find some action. The phonebook was the place to
start. We called some shops and they pointed in the direction of a skatepark called
Rock Solid, where the skaters all "hang" or "chill" (whichever you prefer). We went and
found a scary little in-line park with a tall spine and linoleum floor. I asked around about
any other terrain and a local mall-rat said, "I know where there is a empty pool." The hunt
was on. After skating one pool, we all caught the dreaded blue-tile fever, and all we
could do was look for cement trannies. Away from the Strip, the rest of Vegas looks pret-
ty beat. The ramshackle houses and abandoned
apartment complexes that dot the vapid horizon
are perfect places to scout pools. Backyard buc-
caneers like ourselves jump fences, bust locks
and kick down doors, anything to grind what-
ever we can find. If you can handle all of the
sweat, cottage cheese people, and the buffet lunch
scene from the grave, check-out Vegas. Some
tips for the trip: Circus Circus has a nice hip in
back, the University Of Las Vegas has lots of
benches, islands and stairs, and the old deserted
Strip has pools up the ying-yang. As for the gam-
bler in all of us, play blackjack or nothing at all.

Clockwise from top right: Andy Roy is bad ass in any
backyard situation. The El Rancho pool is twelve feet deep.
The Amoeba was dope. With a limle work, this dirty
capsule awaits. A cleaning crew gets busy at Pair-a-Dice.
Pool powerhouse Ruben Orkin rolls the 'Dice.
