A Journey through Space & Time

THE HELLWAY TO NEW ENGLAND AND BACK
The road from Philadelphia to New England isn't that great a distance, not far at
all. It has been said by some that it can be done in six hours. Six hours is no trek, but
it became a trek for us. You see, it took us ten hours that seemed like twenty. We-
Adam Wallacavage, Rob Erickson, Pat Trick and me, Andy Wright-left on a Thursday,
in heavy hail and rain. It took us two hours to get from one side of Philly to the other.
The rain caused flooding that was so bad, no lie, three cars were washed into Schuylkill
River and floated away. After getting through Philly, things didn't get any easier. The
Skylark (Adam's ridel drove hard, but the road continued to stretch out before us, it was
as if we were on an endless conveyor belt going a cool 65 mph and covering no ground. But
alas, at 3 am, we arrived, zombie-eyed, in Providence, Rhode Island. With us came the
rain. We slept at Sonia Yoon's, a personal heroine of mine.
HERE IN PROVIDENCE
Providence is great. I love it. The town is like
a movie set. It has these crazy little freak under-
scenes, like big fat
s of skaters. The Rhode Island School of
hite girl gangs and
crews
white g
Design area of town is on a steep hill. There are
record shops and what not, and that night we
caught the sweet spins of DJs Kid Dynomite and
Mr Ten Fingers. And furthermore, if you're lucky
and try a little, you can visit the Andre the Giant
posse, skate the in-studio mini and get a bunch
of stickers from the man in command, Shepard
Fairy. The city is run by the mob. All this is true.
Along the highway of life, one will run into a variety of
things. On one such day we can bear witness to a fiery
car crash (top) and moments later receive absolution
from the Snakeman and the magic bus. The trophy is
waiting, but Ram Hannon (left) is too shy to accept the
prize. At Maximus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the
Kiwi slide is reborn sixteen years later. Flying high in
the northern sky, Pat Smith (opposite) taxied down the
runway and was cleared for take-off.
