A veteran skater and talented snowboarder,
Cara-Beth Burnside continues to blaze on
whatever terrain she chooses. During a recent
road trip with kindred spirits Jen O'Brien and
Jody McDonald, Cara-Beth took the time to
explain the game.
-Matt Kennedy
How long have you been snowboarding?
Four years.
So your background is in skating?
Yeah, I guess. I like snowboarding contests
because they have a girl's division. In skating. I
just ride with the guys. It's rad, though.
Do you think that's fair?
Yeah. I mean, what else can I do? There's
just not a lot of girls skating in contests. But
I like skating with the guys because we all
have fun together and everyone is cool.
Would you say that you're a pretty com-
petitive person?
Jen: She is gnarly-style competitive.
Jody: She wants it, then she wants more,
and she won't settle for less.
Is that true Cara-beth?
I just like to be the best at whatever I do.
Jody: Yeah, drink more, eat less.
So, you girls party a lot, huh?
Jen: Not enough.
Jen and Jody are my bad influ-
ences, they come around and just
cause all kinds of hell. They make
things fun. This is my posse
So, what was the best road trip
you girls have ever gone on?
Charleston, The Hangar. We all
drove out there because a friend
of ours was getting married, and
it turned into a rad trip with car
loads of people.
How's the snowboard contests?
They've been pretty lame because
the pipes look like gutters. They're
making it seem like a big deal with all
this TV coverage and stuff, but the
pipes aren't good.
What has it been like traveling to
snowboarding contests this year?
Well, Jen and Jody took me in a WW
Bus with no heat and I had to suffer, so
we got motels.
What snowboard tricks are you working on?
I like to ride good pipes that have tranny and
vert. I've been trying a lot of spin tricks, but I
only like spin tricks where you grab. It's weak
that hardly anyone grabs their board anymore.
What are your plans for the future?
I want to just stay healthy and ride every day.
compete as much as I can, skate a lot of vert in
the summertime, and maybe train up at Mount
Hood's halfpipe.
