RAG TIME
Following the El Segundo parents' boycott of Big Brother, such mainstream
media types as The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal and TV's A
Current Affair all ran predictably biased skate stories. The Journal depicted the
life and style of Mark Gonzales, who was described as "both Mexican and
German-American" as well as "a member of the youth subculture and the skate
boarding subculture." In this exposé, Gonz' art was dissected by critics and art
gallery dealers alike. Illuminated types such as The Fish attempted to explain the
phenomenon. Curiously, Fisher disappeared on his new twenty-eight foot sail-

boat shortly thereafter. The LA
Times interviewed Sal Rocco
but apparently became so con-
fused that they called in
Stacy Peralta as an inter-
preter. Rocco's erudite analysis
of suburban mating rituals was
obviously way beyond their com-
prehension. Peralta, who was
described as "a former pro
skateboarder turned televi-
sion director," was depict-
ed as worried. But
despite The Times'
best efforts to
correlate Gator

to some fake

death squad, the article lacked
coherence and relevance. Rate it as
the kids play too hard. A Current
Affair's attempt at yellow journalism
was also confused at best. Despite a
sugar-coated T&A veneer, the
television types just couldn't get
the skate/evil thing up to speed.
All in all, the media message seems
to be, "If you skate, you are different,
and if you're different it's a crime."

BACK EAST
Celebrating the spring thaw,
upstate New York hosted a con-
test at the recently remodeled
skatepark in Newburg. It used
to have a killer bowl, but now it
just has corner pipes. Tales of
good skating and profes-
sional results came in
the form of Willy

Shipman tied for third. Other notable events
included Dan Drehobl destroying the place with
a grapefruit ankle and Wade Speyer fracturing a
bone in his leg. After Saturday's qualifying, Rick
Oyola was in front of the pack, but Sunday
morning dawned a different story.
Seen in Chicago on the way to New York for
artistic embellishment was road king Julien
Stranger and sidekick Rick Ibaseta.
FAMILY TIES
The Daily Grind skatepark in Sacramento, Cali-
fornia, is moving to a new location which will be
bigger and better. Reportedly, the parties at the
old park were rowdy and ripping. Local talent
Mako Urabe and Joe Sierro tore it like no one
else. In other 916 news, Chris Senn and his girl-
friend celebrated the birth of a baby boy named
Anakin Osborne Senn.
Free Flight skate shop had a ramp demo that
showcased the latest and greatest on the West
Coast. The Seal Beach location held host to such
stalwards as Max Schaaf, Remy Stratton, Peter
Hewitt, Chris Gentry, Omar Hassan, Jennie
O'Brien and the mighty Duane Peters, whose
Masonite blitz had many spectators' jaws touch-
ing the asphalt.
Ron Chatman and Sean Sheffey were spotted
in Japan lounging in the company of some very
big spenders.
DOG DAYS
Revolting types Scott Obradovich and Jet
were reportedly observed on the streets of Long
Beach, California, doing a Vogue Mag photo
session with Nina Hagen and lenswoman Mary
Ellen Mark.
The Las Vegas ski show featured silicone and
flakes as well as Lucero, Sims, Fish, Ternasky,
Rocco and Andrecht. Tony Magnusson set up
shop across from Camp Dickvak as he and the
NHS force attempted to offer some sort of alter-
native to the muck presented by numerous inter-
national ski corporations. Anonymous ski/skate
personages were banned from the Luxor Sphinx
after one too many roll-ins on the gilt gold mar-
ble. Deluxe Tony G was seen in the vicinity of
the Pirate Lagoon finding immersement in an
unsuspecting she-ski demonstrator. Vegas cops
were curious, but no one would rat out the per-
petrator's identity.
BIG DREAMS
Million dollar skateparks are scheduled in both
Poway and Temecula, California. Perhaps it is no
coincidence that the

been quoted as saying, "The bigger the spot,

Martial artist Montgomery is said to have been

stunt work.
Big Island provocateur Dean Edwards was
seen with Grubby Clark, Mike Stevenson, Bob
Shepard and Skip Engblom at the site of anoth-
er Costner film in Hawaii. SMA Skipperboy fled
the Hollywood-built underwater city to hook up
with car customizing legend Dick Dean and
shaper Scott Andersen. The trio chopped, chan-
nelled, nosed and decked a 1949 Mercury
Coupe in record time. Equally on the custom
lead sled tip is Mike Ness of Social Distortion,
who's been keeping time with the Lonely King's
car club.
Is Richard Novak, who repeatedly stresses,
"I'm not going into the bicycle business," active-
ly training with the holder of the world bike land
speed record? Are Santa Cruz intimates amazed
by Richard's purported 100 mile rides? Did Dick
get so psyched that he ripped off Metiver's
right-hand man as widely fabled? Was Novak
pissed off over Metiver's recent party costume?
Kelly Slater was pulling off ninety-second
tube rides at the artificial wave in New Braunfels,
Texas. The board of choice for this extremely
hollow stationary curl is a strapped unit by Carl
Eckstrom. Future endless wave outings are
bound to end up in Burr, Norway, the location of
an even larger man-made barrel.
BOTTOMS UP

time. Apparently his gambling is more serious
than not. Keith has been observed dropping.

jets out.
