Starfing Material
Flying high on a thermal air current,
bird of prey looked down at the land
scape unfolding beneath her. Deep red
gorges were cut into the flesh of the
earth by the endless forces of water,
rock and wind. Six miles south of his
usual terrain, the bird found a long-
abandoned town. The stucco buildings
and blasé architecture clearly indicated
the late-eighties "Desert Lakes" real
estate boom. The man-made evapora-
tion ponds that brought prosperity to
the landowners only lasted a few years
until the water gave out. The area was
now deserted except for the occasional
skaters who would session the smooth
cement and authority-free environment.
Sniffing the wind, the vulture located
the remains of a kid who had bumped
his head during a foolhardy fakie aerial
attempt and had gotten fried under the
flames of the sun. His skin shriveled and
the contents of his stomach sat baking
in a puddle near the victims mouth. The
lucky buzzard would soon gorge on...
