from page 61) one day, it would be like blues. You
have to lay into something and just stay there.
It was a time when people were totally weird,
so you said we're just gonna be just as weird?
Not just as weird but totally out the other end.
We was like twenty-six, twenty-seven, and out of
New Jersey. We were really glad to be out of
that "watch your back" type of thing. We were
having big fun. All the love was free. Acid just
fucked us right up. We were the oldest of the
young black psychedelics. You had the Chamber
Brothers and then Sly popped up. Sly bridged
Motown and Jimi Hendrix, or Motown and us.
Was there a point when you realized it was
going to have a real impact?
I knew right away. I told the group that this
was gonna take twenty years for this to work
'cause I was seeing it work with the weirdest
white groups. I knew that all I had to do was
take my time and work it. So I went back into my
days at Motown, as far as texture. Start off real
ly crazy and sloppy and loose and everything,
but as people started paying attention to you,
you started getting back to what you already
knew was a neat record. By the time we got to,
probably Chocolate City and Mothership, it was
like organized to where it was kinda coherent.
Was Mothership the breakthrough?
It was the first big record. It was the first one
with the arrangement and the story line. Even
America Eats Its Young, I was checking my brain
cells to see how many was lost from the sixties,
'cause in the seventies that whole hippie era was
dead and it was obvious. It went straight to

either Jesus freaks or Manson. The whole thing
got infiltrated. The Panthers got infiltrated, the
hippies got infiltrated. The kids were too strong
politically around the world so the media helped
send that movement into the ground. From the
Manson case, making it that was what hippie
was all about. Till after a while that was the look
of it, made it look real ugly. But it served its pur-
pose. It stopped the war.
I
can understand why you'd work with Dre
and Cube 'cause they've used your beats, but
philosophically do you have much in common?
I would say not over a lot of things. I did "One
Nation Under A Groove" with Ice Cube, now.
But we do have a lot of things in common, as
people. On "One Nation," I sang the song and
he wanted me to do the video and I said, I
would have to know what the video is about
'cause we can't kill nobody on "One Nation."
When we let somebody sample the song, we've
always said, we won't tell nobody that they can
or can't sample it, but we do wanna say that we
don't agree if they shoot somebody. None of
the songs. But especially "One Nation!" Even
though I never liked NWA's "Fuck Tha Cops," or
whatever that shit is called. 'Cause to me, the
police is in the same boat we're in. They ain't
got no money either and they're being used. But
they are trained by the state and they have
power and a gun and the condition to think that
it's them against the people. So, I don't see
them as the enemy, but then they (Cube, Dre)
have to live right there up under that, so I could
see them thinking that. I disagree with the police
being worthy of all my attention, 'cause I know
that their directives come from the state depart-
ment. I could understand writing those kind of
songs even though I never agreed with that con-
tent. I'll still work with them because the system
promotes crime and poverty. Something about
hip-hop reminds me of the Panthers in that they
don't understand that somebody could easily
manipulate the edge that they use to say what
they have to say. You have to know that the
amount that you're stirring up when you get that
late that and easily infiltrate it, in the name of
much excitement going, somebody can manipu
hip-hop.
How do you keep the funk?
Hip-hop is a good example. You need to snip
somebody else's record and you know how you
make a Frankenstein? An arm and a head from
this thing and that. They took that and made a
record out of it. That is funk in the nineties.
Sampling, looping and hucklebucking. Keep the
shit moving at all costs.
