            PANCID
Ndes from the Underground
Thanks to the magic of modern technology,
any bunch of stale, no-talent nimrods can
overdub tape loops, beats, samples, instru-
mentals and vocals until they get some-
thing good enough to put on a CD. Then,
when they play live, they just roll the DATS
and jump around a lot. Hell, why not just
play the CD at home? Meanwhile, the art
of kicking it live has not been lost, there are
still groups that explode all over the audi
ence whenever they play Rancid recent
ly went into Fantasy Studios in Berkeley to
record a new album tentatively titled Black
& Blue. Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion
produced as Rancid en-
deavored to capture the
chaotic onslaught they
incur live. "At one house-
party in West Oakland,
some kid pulled a gun in
the pit," says singer/gui
tarist Lint. "Our last show
at Gilman Street, some kid
broke his leg." With songs
about friendship, unity and
perseverance, the new Ran-
cid will surely romp... A
punk-driven laser beam by
the name of Lagwagon
slices through the fears and stereotypes of
a society gone mad. Trashed is the Lag-
gers' latest, and it exits the pathway of con-
formist ways by facing the nation head on
Further along the skater-honed/punk to
the bone trail, Active Ingredients are
going super-critical. Pounding a hyperac
tive beat, the Ingredients keep punk alive
in the shit kickin' farmland of Bakersfield...
Striking a balance between creativity and
destruction, Orange 9mm unleashes the
power of positive thinking through highly
charged emotional hardcore. Emerging
from the ashes of Burn, vocalist Chaka
Malik infuses insightful, inci-
sive lyrics into a maelstrom
of syncopated positive
forces. "When I get upset or
destructive, people stop
understanding me," says
Malik. "I've found that the
more positive I am, the
more fruitful it becomes."
Besides being positive guys,
Malik and guitarist Chris
Traynor, formerly of Foun-
tainhead, are also skaters,
but they come from the old
school ways. "Small wheels
suck, say malik. They're only good if you
want to do 360' inverted backside kickflip
ollies," says Traynor... Dead horses, mus-
cle cars and sweet Northwestern fuzz color
the world of The Putters on their Fear Of
Women CD. Definitely worth noting... The
origins of Panda are no less cosmic than
the psychedelic soliloquies they play. Gui-
tarist/vocalist Alyssa Wendt explains, "We
were thrown from the realm of blackened
space and we didn't know why. Then we
picked up instruments and it all came flow-
ing out of us... When it comes to rocking
the house, Aminiature knows the formula is
pretty straight ahead. "Rock is no high art,"
says guitarist/vocalist John Lee. "Just turn
up up your instruments and start cranking."
On Depth Five, Rate Six, Aminiature rolls
the knobs and comes out with an engaging
saga of expressionist drama... Shit, fuck,
son-of-a-gun, The Billy Nayer Show finally
has two full-length CDs out, one self-titled,
and one The Ketchup & Mustard Man. The
high-strung, way-out weirdness of Billy
Nayer won't float everybody's boat, but for
the freaks, the deluded, the outcasts and
the strange, these CDs bring home the lib-
erating off-beat quirks that were previously
only available live. -Brian Brannon
