If you need an introduction to George Clinton, then you ain't been paying attention
for the last twenty years. The Father of Funk, along with Bernie Worrell, Eddie Hazel,
Michael Hampton, and Parliament Funkadelic, George Clinton redefined both R&B and
rock and roll. Hey Man! Smell My Finger is Clinton's first album in close to four years,
and the singles "Paint The White House Black" (featuring noted P Funk devotees/
copycats Dr Dre and Ice Cube) and "Martial Law" are all that. Hey Man finds George
back on his game, his wicked sense of revolution and rhythm intact. In '94, Clinton's
mantra "Free Your Ass And Your Mind Will Follow" is truer than ever.
You seem to be associated with a
lot of people's drug experiences.
I guess the drugs produced all
the rest of them, but we get a lot of
weird associations with the group.
There was this white couple who
came to see the show last week
and they was divorced, but they
had joint custody of the P Funk cat-
alog. Is that out there or what?
Your fans are like multi-racial
Dead Heads.
Yeah right. There was this banner
at one of the shows, "Dead Heads
for P Funk." We would always get
this mixture of people. Anna Gordy
said, in Detroit, they used to come
whenever P Funk was in town and
they would have their mink coats
on the back of the chair with their
jeans on, and I'd come out there.
and pee on their drinks. Now, I
wouldn't do that, but I would be
sweating pretty good.
How did you think up P Funk?
It evolved. Just from being a pro-
ducer and a songwriter, I appreciat
to college and we
don't see him for a
while. In the mean-
time, rock and roll,
The Beatles and all
that happens, and
we got one hit, "I
-Amy Linden Wanna Testify"
I paid a dime for that single at a
garage sale.
No shit? It still got that funny col-
ed all the music. Worked at Moored label on it? Anyway, all we
town, started out doing some doo played was like Vanilla Fudge,
wop stuff, and then Bernie goes off
Lemon Pipers, Box Tops and then
all this Canned Heat, 'cause those
were the pop groups that we had
to open up for. Then we were using
Vanilla Fudges' amps one night in
Connecticut, and they had these
Marshalls. We heard what that shit
sounded like for the first time and
said, "Oh this is how they do that
shit!" So I went out and bought
Axis Bold As Love, Are You Exper-
ienced?, Sly Stone's Whole New
Thing, Disraeli Gears. We sat down
and listened to them. We knew that
there was no sense in chasing no
hit record, we had to do something
different. So we bought these
Marshall amps. We had so many
Marshalls. We didn't know how
many you were supposed to have.
We had them in the audience. We
was the loudest group in the moth
erfucking world, but we sounded
rock and roll. People said that we
sounded like The Temptations on,
acid, James Brown on acid. So we
made that sound start working and
that was 1969. I realized that the
next thing had to be an up-tempo
blues, which is funk. I said I have to
put a concept on this and stick to
it, no matter what happens, or in
and out of style. We had to just
stick to it so that (continued page 76
