When you invite half of the skate planet to
SF, mix them up with the City crew, give them
a ramp, food, four kegs, girls and freaks to
show off for, you are basically letting go of the
reins. The first wave of skaters to mount the
ramp were Brannon, Peters, Osage and some
of the Burnside boys. I knew the evening was
already in the hands of fate.
The ramp action was steaming. Christ
worked huge backside ollies. Duffy went low
to high on noseblunts. Drehobl got very sick.
Duane's runs kept everyone back from the
coping. JJ Rogers dropped in and Colin
McKay hurtled nollie kickflip fakies while Wade
Speyer, Phil Shao, Bonderov, Julien, Lee Smith
and the Guerreros threw down. Over in the
rave room, the floor of the Haze was teeming
with crazed street action. Skaters leaped
couches, tables and each other in a skating
rink maelstrom of boards and bodies while the
sound system pu
m pumped out South Beach beats.
At ten bells it was time to announce the
Thrasher 1993 Skater of the Year. Before I
knew I was congratulating Salman Agah. He
stood high and professed his quest to skate
for the Lord. A tear was shed. Plastic cups
were raised and everyone continued skating
until long past midnight.
