Musical expressionism is a source of
unlimited power that can spring from a
variety of outlets. Whether cowpoke,
garage, hip-hop, hardcore, metal or
experimental, modern music comes in a
kaleidoscope of forms and it is surely a
shame to ignore any of them. The
Reverend Horton Heat has been in the
studio with Al Jourgensen of Ministry
and Gibby of the Butthole Surfers,
working on an album that may or may
not be called Liquor In The Front, Poker
In The Rear. While in Memphis with
Gibb, the gang discovered the Bloody
Leroy, a concoction similar to the
Bloody Mary, but with barbeque sauce
instead of tomato juice and consider.

Reverend Horton Heat
played a show with a couple of heavy
metal bands with the Spandex and long
crystal meth hair, and we just started
telling them to get haircuts and take
the eye make up off and wear some
jeans. They were all very shocked, the
few pretty boys were pissed off, but all
in all, it turned out to be pretty fun." So
far, Deadbolt's rapport with the audi-
ence has not turned violent, a good
thing. "Of course," explains Davidson,
"we're heavily armed. We usually have
a drill, say, 'Code Green,' they'll throw
the rifles at us, throw a smoke bomb
into the audience, cause confusion, a
couple of percussion grenades, so then
we can sneak out the door, put the gas
masks on, grab some liquor, grab some
girls and grab the money from the till"
gone mad and ghastly experiments. For a definitive tour through the

Deadbolt. Masters in the art of audi
ence provocation, Deadbolt backs up
their taunts with an array of weaponry.

Increase the peace. Bassist Michael
Manring uses an explosive array of
instrumental techniques to get his point
across on Thank, a mysterious journey
which fuses heavy jazz with bionic bass
riffs. Manring's ques include a Hyper
bass of his own design that features an
extra long neck that allows it to play
way high notes and change tunings
while jamming. Manring is joined by
guitarists Steve Morse of the Dixie
Dregs and Alex Skolnick of Testament
and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander
of Primus, who help him explore a wild
range of musical tones and textures. "
feel like the bass is a misunderstood
instrument, Manring says. "A bass can
do almost anything, it can really crank"

Starr is rollin' strong with a new album
called Hard To Earn. The title, says
Guru, "Represents that longevity in rap
is hard to earn, respect is hard to earn
in anything. Anything of value and sub-
stance in life, you've got to pay dues,
you've got to work hard. Hip hop and
rap is my life and Premier's life." Gang

Starr drops skills on Hard To Earn,
carvin' up the hypnotic jazz grooves,
flowin' the ill rhymes and cutting past
any attempts at quantification. "People
really fuck up the game by all these
labels they put on rap," says Guru.
"They got gangsta rap, jazz rap, politi
cal rap. That's a bunch of bullshit. That's
just to help them understand it. But for
me, rap is about if it's real and if it's
hardcore. That means it's got original
lyrics, the rapper has a dope, unique
voice, that means that the beats are fat
and original, and that it doesn't sound
like anyone else"... In an effort to sup-
