            Notes From The Underground
Voodoo Glow Skulls
Despite the promises of freedom
and justice for all, police in America
sometimes see things in a different way.
In the song. "Stick The Fucking Flag Up
Your Goddamn Ass, You Sonofabitch,"
Propagandhi asks, "Wait a minute dad,
did you actually say freedom? Well if
you're dumb enough to vote, you're
dumb enough to believe him. Because
if this country is so goddamn free, then
I can burn your fucking flag wherever I
damn well please." With fast and flam
boyant songs like that and "Middle
Finger Response," Propagandhi deliv-
ers the word of punk in the land of lib-
erty... Bassist CJ Ramone has seen
many cops, but says pigs of the most
totalitarian variety reside in the greater
LA area. "Me and my sister were cross-
ing the street in Hollywood and these
cops pulled up," he says. "They jumped
out and I thought maybe the store we
were walking by was getting robbed
and they grabbed me by my arm and
said, 'Let's see some identification.' I
thought he was kidding, and he said,
'You just jaywalked.' I was like, 'What
the fuck is that? And he was like, 'Put
your cigarette out, blah, blah, blah. I
guess I've got a problem with authority
figures in general. I don't like to be told
what to do and not to do by anybody.
It's supposed to be a big country with
all kinds of personal freedoms and it
just doesn't seem that way sometimes."
Acid Eaters is the latest album by The
Ramones and features covers of sixties
songs by The Who, The Yardbirds,
Jefferson Airplane and Credence
Ramones
70 Tue
Clearwater Revival done up in true
Ramones fashion. "We did 'Take It As
It Comes,' by The Doors, on Mondo
Bizzaro and everyone liked it," says CJ.
"So our manager suggested an album
of cover tunes from the 1960s acid era"
... One group that can attest to injus
tice in America is the Native Americans.
CJ Ramone has a side project called
Los Gusanos that has a CD Ep called
"I'd Love To Save The World," with pro-
ceeds going to the Oglala Dakota.
College on the Pineridge Reservation.
"Since the Native Americans can't fight
with guns anymore, the only way they
can fight is with lawyers to keep their
land and keep control over their own
governments. So I felt education was
one of the best ways to do that," CJ
says. Los Gusanos means the worms in
Spanish. "When Castro sent all the
people from the mental institutions and
prisons over here, for propaganda pur-
poses he told the people in Cuba that
they were worms, and
that they were crawl-
ing away like worms,
and I felt like that's
probably how all poli-
ticians, including the
ones here, see the
people that they gov.
ern"... The Voodoo
Glow Skulls hoodoo
a heap of hyper ska
with blazing carnival
horns on their "Dog
Pilel" 7". But dog piling, like hedge div
ing in Operation Ivy's "Hedge Core," is
more than just a song, it is a way of life.
"We're just a bunch of goofy individu
als, attests vocalist Frank Casillas.
"We've been known to do some pretty
crazy things and sometimes we catch
people off-guard." A new CD, Who is,
This is!, and one of previously released
records called The Potty Training Years
are also well on the way. In the mean-
time, The Skulls hone their ice blocking
skills, a game not for the weak at heart.
"You can get run over by an ice cube,"
Casillas says... The Angry Babies play
nursery rhymes gone bad with songs
about toys, perverts and killer clowns
on Mister Toyhead. "I hate clowns,"
growls drummer Bugz Burner. "I've
despised them for a real long time. I
remember when downs would come to
the birthday parties and they would be
so obnoxious you couldn't help but dis-
like them". The folks over at Flapjack
Records are letting it sizzle on the grid-
dle with Just Add Water, a tough ass
compilation featuring Badtown Boys,
The Brownies, Cement, Corrupted
Ideals, Fiend Master Freak, Lag
Wagon, Joyride, NOFX and No Use
For A Name Six screaming punk
cheerleaders take the stage and never
give it back. Cock Pit, an all-girl band
from SF, rocks hard with skater Karen
Zapata on drums. Karen says she still
rides but has trouble finding any ramps
...There's good pussy and great pussy,
Superpussy
but there ain't no pussy like Super-
pussy. After all, guitarist Liz Houser
explains, "Mine's velvet." Superpussy
plays songs like "Drunk Again," "Sweet
Young Thing," and "Oops," which, Liz
says, "is about driving down the street
and accidently running over your boy-
friend's new girlfriend"... Long after
the last notes of The Last Waltz rang
out, The Band is back, and Jericho
delivers the soul-stirring melancholy
twang for which they are renown.
