The Sepultura story dates back to 1984 in the dirty working-class streets
of Brazil, when vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera and his brother Igor (drums)
decided to form a metal band. Still in high school, the teenagers recorded.
a couple of primitive demos and landed a deal with a tiny Brazilian label.
At the time, it looked like the band might someday make a dent in the
Brazilian underground, but no one expected world domination.
Nearly a decade later, Sepultura is poised at the brink of super stardom.
with its bombastic fifth record, Chaos AD. Mixing tribal beats and classical
passages with tumultuous rhythms and socially-conscious lyrics, the record
opens up as many doors as it knocks down. But despite its mainstream
appeal, Sepultura ligor, Paulo, Andreas, and especially Max) remain true
misanthropic rebels. Having just been released from a weekend in jail for
harassing a cop in Phoenix, Max is as feisty and angst-ridden as ever
Would you call Sepultura a death metal band?
I don't think of it as death metal. I don't listen to death metal and I don't
sing about Satan. Death metal to me is about being Satanic and trying to
play as fast as you can and that's not what Sepultura is about. Sepultura.
has a lot to say and we work hard in the way we make the songs.
What makes you angry?
I think people make me angry in general. You try your best to carry your
ife in a positive way, but there's always something or someone to fuck it all
up and make you pissed. That's where my ideas for lyrics come from. In ten
years of doing this I've been dealing with all kinds of people, and I've dis-
covered that there are jerks all over. In Brazil I've had problems with skin-
heads and fights and sometimes I have a really bad temper. I can't help it.
What's the most irrationally violent you've ever been?
One time a guy came to our show and didn't like it. I was eating a ham
burger at McDonald's and he said, "Yeah it wasn't dirty and rotten enough."
And I said, "Oh you like dirty and rotten stuff, don't you?" And he's like,
Yeah I do.' So I grabbed my Big Mac and splashed the whole thing in his
face and started beating him up and my friend had to separate the fight.
Looking back, I don't like what I did, but the guy got on my nerves at the
wrong time. My first reaction was to beat the shit out of him and I did.
Do you have any sort of rules you live by?
My attitude has always been the same. If you're cool with me I'm totally
cool with you, but if you fuck me up, I'll do the same back to you. That's
how I grew up and that'll never change. -Interview by Jon Wiederhorn
The tale begins in the hardcore days of Washington DC: 1) After releas
ing three Lps, the members of Soulside break-up to go back to college. 2)
After getting fidgety and impatient, Scott McCloud (vocals), Alexis Fleisig
(drums) and Johnny Temple (bass) join up with recording engineer friend
Eli Janney (samples, bass, vocals) as a studio project, first called Little Baby,
and then Girls Against Boys, around the mid-eighties. 3 GVSB evolves,
end releases another Lp and an Ep before moving to New York and releas-
ing the wry and sardonic Venus Luxure No. Baby with McCloud's mass-
murderer voice joining the parasitic dual-basses, vigorous guitar and crazy
samplings. Got it? Good. Get it live.
Live shows are very loud, very noise-filled, Janney says. "We try to
keep it as chaotic as possible-without annoying people." Jannie Boddy

What's this new album all about?
B: Spinach. Spinach makes you strong.
How many people have asked you what
SNFU means?
B: About three hundred and seventy-five.
It actually means Snot Nosed Fuck-Ups.
B. Oh yeah, Something Nobody Fuckin'
Understands. That makes sense to me
because then you don't have to explain it
any further than that. Say no more.
Mark, would you like to make some com
ments on the music scene today?
M: It was funny that everyone was so sur-
prised when Nirvana got big because I've
been listening to them for years. And I
think the death of vertical skating is prema-
ture. Vert will come back. And I want to
thank Jeff Kendall for the free boards
What's the most fucked up thing that
happened to you guys on tour?
M: Ken shit in his pants in Yugoslavia. He
had the runs really bad
when we played in
Holland so he went
darting off and we
played Pipeline
and he came
back and got
chewed out. So
the next time,
he did it right
on stage. If
you got to
go, you got
to go.
Do you have anything
you want to say?
M: I made this vow to
only shave when the
Oilers won and they're on
a six-game losing skid,
and I really want to shave
and I feel like a buffoon.
Do you play hockey?
M: Yeah, me, Brent, Rob
and Dave do. We lost to
DOA last year. I punched
Joey Shithead in the face.
though. But he was wear-
ing a full face shield. Joey
Shithead wears a face
shield, can you believe it?
They're supposed to be
this tough and aggressive
team. They call them-
selves The Murder Squad
What has kept the band
together all this time?
M: Just playing the music.
There's something about
going to cities you've
never been to and walk-
ing into a strange bar and
playing the set, and you
look out and the place
will be a total mess and
it'll be warm instead of
cold because there's a
room full of people. It's
kind of a rush. The live
shows have kept us
together more than
anything. And a lack
of education. What
else am I going do?
I'll have to go back
to school or perish.
But I don't want to
talk about that.
