by hand. I tell them what I want and
they make me a guitar.
What else do you do?
I shoot a lot. I collect guns and
swords. I'm into war stuff. Trey is
into big muscle cars. He takes old
cars and puts these huge monster
engines in them. He's got a buddy
that works on real dragsters and he
helps him make hot rod cars. These
cars are definitely not meant for
driving on the street. He's going off
the deep end. Ha, ha, hal
Do you like HP Lovecraft?
I've read everything HP Lovecraft
ever wrote. It's too bad the guy's
not around to write more stories. I
own the Arkham House hard cover
collection, which holds everything
he ever wrote. What really bugs me
is these movies that just drag his
name through the mud. They're try
ing to put him in the same cornball
genre as Stephen King, I know a lot
of people like his stuff, but I don't.
HP was a quiet, anti-social, to him-
self type person and those movies
are something he would not have
approved of. The world ruins every-
thing. That's why it's so stupid.
Do you get accosted by Jesus
freaks more at home in Florida or
on the road?
It happens everywhere. I don't
get mad at them though, because
it's their leadership that's the prob-
lem, not the individuals. Some of
them are good people. It's the insti-
tution that's the problem, because
it's corrupting the people. It's
always the big body that attacks
the small person, so you have to
build yourself an army that is equal
to or greater than the opposing
army, at least in enthusiasm. If you
have one hundred enthusiastic peo-
ple, they can make a hell of a lot
more noise than one thousand peo-
ple who are just so-so. These indi-
viduals are so misguided by a reli-
gion that has been around for so
long that it's hard to get rid of. But
I'm doing my best. Give me a few
more years and I will have rid the
world of it. That's my goal anyway.

that appeared, with a certain
amount of consistency, on those
albums? "Boogie Down Produc-
tions is owned and controlled by
me," KRS says. "I am Boogie Down

I included other people on those
albums because I wanted to make
this posse thing real, a crew that
stuck together, but I can't do it
when I'm self-destructing. If you

or not care about me, then after a

while when I come to my senses
KRS-One evidently came to his
senses prior to releasing the 1992
album Sex and Violence, because
this is when he claims to have fired
everyone associated with BDP,
except for his brother Kenny Parker
and Willie D, because, KRS says,
"They were draining KRS-One, and
not giving anything back."
However, this story conflicts with
one told by an anonymous former
member of the crew, who claims to
have left voluntarily because they
were tired of being down with a
perpetrator. "KRS-One isn't all that
he claims to be," they said, adding
that his image is nothing more than
a marketing ploy.
KRS-One, however, maintains the
position that he is an educator of a
supreme caliber. "I represent the
light, I represent intelligence," he
says. "I feel myself in line with Jesus
Christ, John the Baptist, Malcolm X,
and Marcus Garvey. It's good to
have something you can represent.
I would feel worse if I had to fish for
a concept, but as the light, that's a
sellable image."
History shows that there were
some who thought that Marcus
Garvey was a perpetrator with his
Back To Africa movement, just as
there were varying opinions on
Jesus Christ and Malcolm X. While
KRS-One's image might be sellable,
he realizes that the type of rap he
performs doesn't bring in the cash
flow his counterparts like Dr Dre, or
Ice Cube experience.
"Fantasy sells more," he says,
"Reality in music doesn't sell much,
but it lasts longer. Reality in music
becomes classic and that's where
I'm at."
His latest album, Return To The
Boom Bap, is being hailed as his
first solo album and his best record
ing to date. It features the produc
tion skills of DJ Premiere, Showbiz
and AG, and Kid Capri, which can
only mean hella jeep beats.
KRS-One is full of contradictions,
Return Of The Boom Bap is pur-
ported to be his first solo album,
yet he says his last four releases
were solo efforts as well. He fired
nearly all of the members of BDP,
yet he's been a solo act since Scott
La Rock died. His image as "the
light" is very sellable, yet there
appears to be a degree of sincerity
in the mission he's undertaken, his
desire to educate. There will always
be people like KRS-One, borderline
egomaniacs, the consummate
salesmen, ready with just the right
words to suck you in. They mostly
serve as a reminder to always ques-
tion those that are self-appointed
prophets.

for skateboarding and not be
somewhat involved.
How can we change it?
We can't, it's too late. It's up to
the companies.
What are you willing to do?
Try not to stress, though some-
times it happens. Also, try not to
vibe other people because it sucks
getting vibed. People don't know
enough so they're quick to judge.
What is good about skating?
It's fun when no one is stressing.
that's a little rare these days. Also,
like the adrenaline involved, that
keeps me ticking. Look for things
to fear, sometimes I conquer my
fear, sometimes I fail, but I try.
How do you define a pro?
All I can say is why I'm pro even
though no one's ever heard of me:
So I can skate and not have to
worry about work or school.
Have you ever thought about just
quitting?
Not really. I don't like giving up
on anything. Except drugs. I gave
that up a long time ago.
Felix Arguelles
What's wrong with skating?
Bad attitudes, some people think
because they're better than you it
means they're a better person too.
How can we change it?
Everybody has to grow up a lit-
tle, skating isn't just for kids any.
more. People make livings out of
the shit.
What are you willing to do?
I'm pretty chill, I get along with
everybody, I think.
What's good about skating?
Making tricks hard or easy, new
or old, and no matter how tech,
making something is the best.
How do you define a pro?
Somebody who makes money by
keeping up with the changing and
progressing sport of skating.
Have you ever thought about just
quitting?
On occasion. For example,
maybe on a bad day or when I get
hurt. Or maybe just quit being in
the spotlight.

schemes, but nothing is wrong with
Lack of originality and marketing
riding skateboards.
How can we change it?
Promote the positive and ignore
the negative.
What are you willing to do?
Help run a good company.
What is good about skating?
Rolling, landing on your board,
the board sticking to your feet.
How do you define a pro?
Someone who is aware of his
ability and in touch with his own
skateboarding.
Have you ever thought about just
quitting?
Nope.
Colin McKay
What's wrong with skating?
Extended tricks, contest judging.
There are about five people in the
industry making all the money.
Magazines that take away from the
sport rather than contribute.
How can we change it?
Have bigger companies sponsor
events. Find a better way to judge.
What are you willing to do?
Help.
What is good about skating?
Fun, hanging out, Guy Mariano
and Eric Koston
