Vegans, straight edgers and hardcore
lesbian feminists all have the name
NOFX indelibly scrawled on their hit
lists. But over a quiet lunch of spicy gar-
lic chicken at Soo Fong's in San Fran-
cisco, guitarist/vocalist Fat Mike says
that it doesn't matter what
other people think of his
band. When it comes to
how they feel, NOFX is
all about telling it like
it is. Where other
groups always have
to play certain types
of music or
take politi-
cally moti-
vated
stances,
NOFX can
do whatever
they want.

Mike, what is the present
state of punk rock?
Well, it's pretty crazy
right now. It's bigger than
it's ever been. The crowds
are real good, we're selling
a lot of records and having
a good time. The downfall
of a lot of bands is they
play one style for a long
time and then if they
change, people say, "Oh,
they're changing." If they
stay the same, people say.
"Oh, they're always the
same." But we break in all
kinds of music, we have for
a long time. So we can play
jazz, reggae or anything we
want, still keeping the main
focus on punk though.
Punk is cool, it's just never
been so popular before.
A lot of the new kids still
have the same spirit.
I was fourteen when I
got into punk rock, we
were kids too. It's just that
most people grow out of it.
Those people are the fuck
ups. They get old.
It's pretty amazing that
everyone in the band, the
three original members, are
the original members from
'83. That's really cool.
Now you have four guys.
Yeah, we have a rhythm
guitar player now. But we
were a three-piece for the
first four years.
Have you ever suffered
any inter-band strife?
Like most bands, we've
had our problems. I got
into a fist fight with our
guitar player's girlfriend
once. That was cool. At
first, she was just biting.
scratching and pulling my
hair and I wasn't hitting her.
I had a devil lock back then.
I was behind her and she
started yanking on my devil
lock from over her shoul-
der. I punched her in the
face and stomach. And Eric
was saying, "Stop, stop it."
Interview by Brian Brannon Photos by Jesse Fischer
Why was she so pissed?
She was crazy. I was in
the pit with Eric slamming
around and she spit on my
face. So that's what started
it. I hate spitting.
Did lan ever say anything
about "Straight Edge?"
No, but I want to know
what he says. We played
with Fugazi in Amsterdam.
We got to meet him and
everything. I haven't seen
him since, but I'd love to
hear what he would say
about it. I'm sure he thinks
it's funny. He may not like
it, but it's done in good
faith. We're not burning
him or anything. We cov-
ered it because it's proba-
bly the most influential
punk rock song of all time.
Do you ever get hassled
by straight edge people?
We get hassled by just
about everybody because
in our earlier days, we
talked shit about every
body. We talked shit about
vegetarians, peace punkers
and straight edge kids. I
just hate people that limit
themselves. If you don't
want to do drugs, don't do
drugs. If you don't want to
eat meat, don't eat meat.
Why do you have to make
a stand? You know, I'm this
and you're not. We're just
people. Now we get a lot
of shit from just punkers
because we're bigger and
we're making money.
What do you guys do with
the money?
El Hefe bought a house
out in McKinleyville. I was
going to buy a house in
Noe Valley. Erik Ghint races
motorcycles on weekends.
Eric Melvin does nothing.
He drinks coffee all day.
Are you working on new
material right now?
Yeah. Our next album will
have like twenty-two short,
fast, hardcore songs. We
wrote a lot of poppy songs
on our last album and we'll
have a few on our new one
but punk is my favorite
music so that's what I want
to play. It took us a long
time to start doing good,
we sucked for a long time.
What are some songs on
the new album?
We've got a song called
"Don't Call Me Whitey,"
and you have to put your
own meaning to it. We
have a song about me see-
ing a girl I grew up with in a
porno movie. I tell her that
she's fucked in doing all
this, she tells me that I'm
fucked because she's just
making money doing what
she wants to. I mean, look
at the coal miners. They're
fucking their body up a lot
more than a porno star.
They're dying and getting
black shit in their lungs and
all some porn star is doing
is getting fucked.
