Clockwise from top left: Wake-up call in the
bowls of Marseille, France. Neal Hendrix
bones up in the air department. Mod Mike
Frazier mode 'em drool. The Brazilian
powerhouse Tarobinha 180° nosegrind
on the rail at Münster. English master
Carl Shipman in control. Joey Tershay
got fat on the hips of Marseille.
ANSVANS
VANS VANS
showed up to hang out on
the grassy knoll that over-
looked the park and smoke
hashish and play guitars to
Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan.
They couldn't speak any
English, but they knew all
the words to the American
songs. Eventually, we fell
asleep there huddled over
all our junk, until the early
morning sprinklers forced
us into the confines of the
bowls. Throughout the
night, our campsite was
raided by mopeds, drunks.
and crazies. We spent three
days there getting burned
to a crisp, and after three
separate trips to the hos
pital (stitches, infection and
sunspots) we cut out to
see the competition in
Germany because where
the contests are, the kids
are, and where the kids are
the parent's money is.
We hit Germany like
burned-out road zombies.
The first thing promoter
Titus said to me was "You
have John Cardiel?" I said,
"Slick, wood or flesh?" And
we were in the stadium
skating in no time. As for
the contest, it was pretty
lackluster. The spectators
and participants alike.
seemed to be in a
fog. Not that we
weren't. Through
the dim haze i do
remember the
following treats:
In street, Ethan
Fowler, Carl Ship-
man and Tarobin-
ha. Salman fired
nollie lipslides
down the hand-
rail and Cardiel
jumped from the
vert ramp to the
street course by
way of frontside
air. Quote: "It
was killer, I flew
right over this
chick's head."
Also in the Cards
arsenal was the
no-pads frontside
backflip attempt.
He was scaring
everyone, includ-
ing himself. The
street contest.
was won by Ed
Templeton from
start to finish. In
