Captain Sensible, guitarist for The Damned, put the
extraterrestrial perspective to music with a solo album
called The Universe of Geoffrey Brown. Set against
wildly fluctuating psychedelic tones and slick produc
tion, The Universe expands the notion that when a civ
ilization reaches a certain point of technology utter
annihilation becomes an option. The album plots the
story of a suit-wearing nine-to-fiver who calculates the
courses of nuclear missiles and discovers a message
from a long dead alien species. Those familiar with The
Damned's seventeen years of anarchy and destruction
might find The Universe a little syrupy, but Sensible
says having his own solo project allows him to play, say
and do whatever he feels. "Sometimes, the guys in the
group will say, 'Captain, why don't you behave yourself
and just do the songs and stop telling the audience
filthy jokes?"" he says. "Now, I'm running my own
group and I can do exactly what I want. I
can piss on the stage and nobody can i
stop me. I remember one night in Los
Angeles, the police turned out because I
was naked on stage and the roadies hus-
tled me back. First of all, the lighting crew
had the sense to turn all the lights off in
the venue because the police were storm-
ing the stage. And then I got backstage,
but because I didn't have any clothes on,
I tread on a glass and cut my foot open
and there was blood everywhere. When I
got into the dressing room, I put my
clothes on and the police came in and
said, "Where's that damn limey who had
his clothes off?... Tony Montana, Steve
Soto, Rick and Frank Agnew from The
Adolescents got together with Mat and
Warner Young, Bruce Duff, Rik L Rik and
Dave Nazworthy and called themselves
The Pinups to cover primal punk tunes
including "Sonic Reducer," "Stretcher
Case," "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Johnny Got His
Gun." An indubitable slamfest of timeless
crunchers... A double CD tribute to the
man who drinks loogies from a chalice,
Welcome To Our Nightmare,
features renditions of Alice
Cooper songs by Bug Lamp,
The Flaming Lips, Bulimia
Banquet, Haunted Garage,
Chris Connelly, Claw Ham-
mer, The Hangmen, Sloppy
Seconds, Duchess De Sade,
and The Vandals, to name a
few... San Francisco skate
dog Tony Guerrero, former
guitar bender of Touch Me
Hooker and Free Beer, is
now throwing down with a
stone cold combo called The
Silver Tongue Devils. "We
like that old rock and roll
feeling, like Deep Purple
meets James Brown with a
little Thin Lizzy thrown in," he explains. "It's got some
soul but it's real heavy"... Speaking of Purple, Jon
Lord says their latest album stands up to anything
they've ever done. "We've reached a point now where
if we're going to be called Deep Purple we might as
well sound like Deep Purple," he says. The Battle
Rages On fumes with classic Ritchie Blackmore guitar
strains of distinction, gothic lan Gillian vocals and the
furious sound of Lord's keyboards cranked to the hilt.
As for the live delivery, Lords says the stories of him
from the
ocking his orgen so hard that it occasionally comes
plan, he says. "It comes when the mood takes me,
and apparently it very often takes me. My keyboard
technician hates me for it, but it's a big old wooden
Hammond, it loves me, it can take it"... Scrambled
surf hard-boiled over easy with a habernera salsa runs
from the skillets of Huevos Rancheros on Endsvillel...
Howling, pounding metallic fury brimming with a psy-
chotic edge drives Transnational Speedway League:
Anthems, Anecdotes And Undeniable Truths, the
debut Lp by Clutch. Vocalist Neil Fallon says he pens
lyrics for therapy, "I write songs to get things off my
chest... Hedgehog flies with screaming velocity on a
tight fusillade called You Happy Face. Santa Cruz locals
gone mad, Mike Schmiedt, Eddie Gregor and Andrew
Orci play hard and soulful... For a full-on sampler of

"I believe in danger, I believe in
being a warrior soul, and that's how it
has always been to me. When I got
involved in rock and roll, it wasn't for
the money, it wasn't for the girls, it
was a weapon of revenge. It was how
I was going to get back at everybody
I hated. As I was growing up my only
friend was the music that I created in
my head. I got this band together and
we just went in and annihilated
"When I go out on the road, it's
not all about when I will be back. The
rock and roll underground will live in
me long after I'm dead and gone
because my allies will carry it on.
There are no laws, there are no rules,
it's time to break down the bound-
aries. It's time to spread the rage"
