Who says the revolution has to make a lot of
noise? Coming out of Oaktown with a bullet,
The Coup is on the move, Their groove is
smooth, their beats are fat, their facts are solid,
and they're rapping in a straight subversive
mode. But The Coup is not overt in their activi
ties, the sound is their first calling.
"Usually, the music is what draws your atten
tion, says delivery man E-Roc, who met up with
co-conspirator Boots on the night shift at UPS,
crisp sound, the full mix, the fat mix, the highs,
the mids, the lows, the old analog keyboards,
the gritty bass line, the grand piano, the full
sound-we like to put those together."
Above the rollin' shuffle of the jams on The
Coup's new album Kill My Landlord, dual sniper
delivery is targeted between Boots and E-Roc
as the record skips to the scratches of DJ Pam
the Funkstress. On cuts like "Dig It," "Funk
and Foul Play, The Coup get it going on
is capitalism, the root of every problem
that you can see that deals with oppres
sion and exploitation in the world is cap-
italism. Killing is going on all the time
and destruction of ourselves is going on.
So anything that's going in the opposite
way, that's going against the ruling class
and against the status quo is progress.
So the main point I'm getting across
with this album is that we have to ana-
goppression and exploitation in the world.

Coup. Like the song "I
Ain't The Nigga" says, "If
I'm a slave, I'm a slave
to the rhythm."
