Building backyard pools is a whole different
story. First, you have to own your own prop-
erty, because this thing is permanent. Kelly
Belmar and Chicken both own homes and
appreciate the fineries of a concrete curve, so
the pool scene was ideal for them. They began
by digging out all the dirt and took to hand-
sculpting the shape and depth that they want
ed. Then, they had some professional pool
builders come in and pour the puppy.
When eternal madman Mark Hubbard and
his pals were derailed last year from building
their custom bowl in downtown Seattle, they
packed up their trowels and moved to West
Seattle to transplant their dream. The end
result is a massive bowl that is presently wait-
ing for coping donations, affectionately des
ignated as The King Kong Kidney.
Basements are plentiful, but the space
limitations are cramped, to say the least.
Poncho Moler used this to his advantage by
making it function with the small ceilings and

from Belmar's, Chicken's Pool sits nestled in the shade, a little
more mellow, but just as skateable. Riky Barnes (opposite left
