Notes from the
"Old punks never die. they just mature like fine wine." Thus spake Colin
Abrahall, lead vocalist for the unconquerable GBH. The latest outing by the
stalwart English punkers is Church of the Truly Warped, and die-hard fans of the
patented GBH full throttle ignition won't be disappointed. Some say Colin must
have a hole in his head to keep it going after all these years, and, they might be
right. "In the 1988 American tour, I got shot in the head on stage in Winnipeg.
Canada, he says. "I was just singing and then I felt something hit me, and I
thought it was a coin, because it was pretty sharp. So I walked off the stage, my
head pouring blood, and went into the dressing room where there was a minor
And I could see a perfect circle in my head. We finished the set and found all
these BBs on the stage. Some guy must have been shooting at us. A month
later, I said to my girlfriend, joking, 'I still think I've got this bullet in my head."
And she said, 'Get to a hospital quick. So I went to a hospital and the B8 was
still in my head, so I had to have it cut out The Jerky Boys get their kicks
hassling anonymous strangers on the phone, but they don't consider them
pranks, they call 'em candid calls. No one knows who the Jerky Boys actually
are, but Kamal and Johnny B go under many different aliases, like Frank Rizzo,
Saul Rosenberg, Jake the Hot Rod Mover and Mike De Rucci. Their technique
is so refined they must spend hours preparing themselves. "We have to be in
character and the right frame of mind," explains The Egyptian Magician in a
convenience store vibratone. "We have to sit around and smoke Camel's drop
pings and get in a nice mood and then call"... Now it can be told, Kiss Alive III.
The collection of Kiss songs on this frantic slab straight outta "Detroit Rock
City" is "Unholy No one can refute that "Heaven's On Fire" and "Creatures of
the Night" are "Watchin' You." So listen babe, "I Was Made For Lovin' You"
and make no mistake, "I Still Love You" So let's "Rock 'n' Roll All Nite" and
"Lick It Up" "Forever." Because you know, "Domino," "I Love It Loud" and
"God Gave Rock 'n' Roll To You Tim Kerr Records of Portland, OR, (not to
be confused with the Austin, TX, Tim Kerr of Big Boys/Bad Mutha Goose/
Monkeywrench fame) has released some rollicking sounds lately. Most notably
is 14 Songs For Greg Sage & The Wipers, which takes off where the 8 Songs
boxed vinyl set left off. Already a testament to the raging northwest influence
of Greg Sage and The Wipers, the compilation cranks on with the addition of
thick and sweet Honey, catatonic Calamity Jane, vivid Hazel, delicious Saliva
Tree, along with possibly the last song ever from Nation of Ulysses, and a col-
laboration of Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth and Keith Nealy of Cell, on
top of an already all-star alignment including Napalm Beach, M99, Nirvana,
Poison Idea Dharma Bums. Crackerbash, Hole and The Whirlies... A harmo
nious rhapsody of driving psychodelic delights, Deal With It by Gorilla dis-
proves the old saying, "They don't make 'em like the used to." The screaming
Vox organ will cure what ails you and the raging bull guitar work could surely
move mountains... Four fine females with attitude are searching for the arche-
typal seventies party dude, a Hawaiian shirt wearing cat by the name of Manny.
Luscious Jackson are the smooth grooving motherheads of Grand Royal, the
Beastie Boys' record company Manny is a casual chum lounging on the couch
of the CD In Search of Manny. Singer Gabby explains, "The real Manny is my
mother's ex-boyfriend from about twenty years ago and he's a pretty cool
dude." Luscious Jackson sees the majesty of Manny as they gaze into his lan-
guid eyes. They feel their hearts pumping passion through their limber veins.
Lyricist/word mistress Jill Cuniff explains, "I love him because he's a typical guy
who would've been around in our childhood. He's like a spirit of a time in our
youth." But for all their love of Manny, the girls also love skater boys. Gabby
interjects, "We're going to run away with the skate circus. We're all going to
marry little skater boys on the road"... The baddest zydeco sounds ever to rise
out of Louisiana emitted from the lungs and accordion of the incomparable
Clifton Chenier. His moanful wailing style is captured for all to hear on The
Clifton Chenier Anthology, a double CD dose of triple mojo hands from the
original King of Zydeco himself... Ten hits and rising. House of Mirrors reflect
a fuming mirage of melting walls and tingling body rushes. Tunes like "Black
Leather And White Trash," "Cowboy In My Mind" and a purple blotter rendition
of "Eleanor Rigby" by The Beatles dance with glowing, growing worm colonies
waving down from what used to be an acoustic ceiling.
