Powerful, desert bred rock and roll.
Sand Rubies, the new album featuring
"Santa Maria Street,"
and "Goodbye."
"Don't
you know? shouted Joe "Run" Simmons from the majestic
stage of Radio City Music Hall. "Don't you know that there can be
no mother fucking hip hop without Run mother fucking DMC?"
Hell yeah, they are back and they're down with the King (that would be God, not Elvis), but the beats are still dope, the rhymes are still
wicked and the guys who started it, no shoelaces and all, are in the house. And like the song says, "Who's house? Run's house, fool."
The word on the street is comeback, but the guys ain't buying it. "We've always been true to the game," Run says slowly, in the rela-
tive quiet of Profile Records' conference room. "We got rhymes, we been rapping, you know what I'm saying? We didn't leave it to have
to come back to it. People give us a lot of respect. We never fell so far or been so weak that nobody would think they're bigger than us."
Assisted by a who's who of hip-hop, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Naughty By Nature, PE, Diamond D, EPMD and Q Tip, "Down With
The King" is the trio's strongest record in years and the single is already blowing up. "We have been chilling for a while," Jam Master Jay
admitted. "Some kids who are fifteen haven't heard songs from Run DMC since they was ten."
"Down With The King" is the first time that the group has gone out of its inner circle to get help. "We went way outside this time.
People wanted to make records with us," Jay said. "It seemed like right when we was at the top of this album, we caught a crazy vibe in
the hip-hop community, like everybody was with us. It was like a vibe."
"God did it," Run adds.
"People were hyped about it in the hip-hop community," says Jay. "The only people saying that we was over was people in the indus
try who had their groups booming and didn't want to see us... It's all about keeping it fresh. If you keep it fresh, then you're not over."
