DETROIT PISTONS POWER PROGRAM
by Arale Kander
Strength and Conditioning Coach, Detroit Pistons
The skateboard is a valuable instrument for improving bal-
ance, flexibility, strength, endurance and power. I have been
using skateboards in training the Detroit Pistons with encour
aging results. Skateboards can be used to strengthen the hips
(gluteals, upper hamstrings, hip rotators), thighs (quadricepts,
lower hamstrings), calves (gastrocnemius, soleus and per-
oneals), and abdomen. In addition, boards are useful in
developing balance between opposing groups of muscles.
A skateboard can be used to simulate a running motion
with one foot stabilized on the floor and the other foot on the
board: the skateboard is moved forward and backwards while
simultaneously rotating the upper body. The movement will
improve flexibility in the hip flexor region in addition to maxi
mizing trunk rotation. The standing leg will utilize the gluteals
and hip extensors to drive the skateboard forward and back-
wards. While the back of one hip is working, the front of the
opposite hip is being utilized to the fullest. Several muscle
groups will be recruited to accomplish this basic movement.
Stability is required in several areas including the
trunk, hip, thigh and ankle region. By attaching an
elastic cord to the board, you can increase resistance
and therefore will be working on a strength compo-
nent. The same activity can be performed to the side,
to work on inner thigh strengthening and flexibility.
By changing the position of the cord you can change
the muscle groups you are utilizing. By increasing the
speed against the resistance you will also incorporate a
power component.
Similar movements can be performed with the upper
body. Power push-ups are an excellent exercise for chest
and forearm development. The power push-up is an
advanced exercise consisting of a push-up on two skate-
boards while allowing the skateboards to separate. This
will involve stabilization of the entire trunk during the
movement which intensifies the exercise.
I have developed over a hundred exercises with a
skateboard and have found it to be a tremendous
tool in the overall development of any athlete.

There, on the window
