Boredom is the most prevalent factor in today's contest scene, yet
out of boredom comes some interesting things. In true mockery of
the day's proceedings, Sal Barbier digs back into the history books
to launch a vintage wallride while waiting for his turn. It was prob
ably the most fun he had all day.
When all is said and done, there is
nothing like hooking up. Throngs of
freaks mill around asking, "Where is
the party?" "How about flowing me
that deck?" And, "Who do you think
won?" When the skaters leave, they
all say the same thing. "Contests
suck." Be that as it may, they are all
gluttons for punishment, because
they all come back next year.
When hundreds of skaters get together, you know it is
going to get rowdy. The testosterone, the beer, and the
sun-baked brains all add up to action. After the PSL con-
test, the Venice homeboys got a little over-rambunctious
and rearranged the obstacle to their own liking. From the
dead cat toss at Mile High, to the burning of jump ramps in
Escondito, all the mayhem is just another part of the show.
