Crisp, heavy and full bore. The Fluid burn no bridges but the road
ahead. Like The Beatles had The White Album, and The Damned
had The Black Album, The Fluid has their masterpiece of crankin
tunes called Purplemetalflakemusic. Seven-and-a-half years with
all the same members and still going strong. The Fluid has paid
some dues. "Part of the benefit of going on so long with the same
focus is that the label was able to see something that already
worked," says singer John Robinson. "We've definitely been
around the block a few times, so if the pay-off is we can do any
thing we want to do with promotion, then it was worth it"... Another
instant modern-day punk classic is an all-out attack of driving may-
hem by Blohole called Leave it To Blohole. This sonic montage of
angst and energy is peppered with catchy choruses like "Cock-
roaches Never Die, "Leave Me Alone" and the overwhelming punk
transfusion of ZZ Top's rebel yell, "Beer Drinkers and Hell-
raisers... With a 7" single called "I Want To Go To Bed With
You," the Mini-Skirt Mob know that they'll be misconstrued. "1
probably expect it," says vocalist/guitarist Amy. "If you listen to
the song you can pretty much figure out what it's about, but I know
a lot of people won't bother getting past the title and they'll just
think, Wooooooo! That's pretty blatant! Good. Let them be
shocked. But if anyone listens to the lyrics they'll realize, 'Oh,
indeed. It's quite the opposite of what we thought it was.' It's kind of
cheeky and sarcastic, a lot of our songs are in that vein. We have a
song called "I'm In Love With a Jerk' and another one called "Tell
Him. The chorus is like, "Tell him that you hate him/tell him that
you hate his guts, It's about a guy that you like but you treat him
NOTES from the underground
really bad and he likes you more... Orbiting the dark star of
insanity, the Cosmic Psychos rule the punk rock cosmos with a
vengeance. It's been awhile since Blokes You Can Trust came
crashing down from the sky, but back-tracks galore are now scat-
tered all over the States. AmRep mashed their first two Lps togeth-
er on Down On The Farm, and SubPop put out the audacious
astronaut's outer limits Lp Go The Hack as a domestic terrestrial
release... Underground for most of their ten years of existence.
The Conditionz have stood the steady persistence of time and
emerged with a screaming groove machine modestly titled Kings of
the Whole Wide World... One-time G&S pro Danny Webster has
been pounding the skins as well as the pavement lately. Sitting
behind the snare with a band called Insane, the Web keeps the
rhythm to a mighty metal Molotov stand-off called Things Are
Looking Up... The saga of Negativland making fun of U2 rocks of
deceit and lawyers. Suffice it to say, if they ain't being sued, they're
suing. Forget the God & Son bands: God, Godflesh, God's
Acre, Fear of God. Supreme Love Gods, God Is My Co-Pilot.
Sister Goddamn, God & Texas, Godawful, The God Machine,
God Bullies, Godzilla, Godhead, Godbiscuit, Jesus Jones.
Jesus Lizard, Jesus Christ Superfly, MC 900 Ft. Jesus. The
Jesus and Mary Chain, Liquid Jesus. etc.. the latest battle of
band names falls into the hardware store category. Besides
Shovelhead, Tool, Monkeywrench, Clawhammer, Clock-
hammer, MC Hammer, Voodoo Gearshift, Big Drill Car, Nine-
Inch Nails, Arcwelder. Titwrench, Shonen Knife, Mallett. Anvil,
Daisy Chainsaw, Chainsaw Kittens and Yardstick, there's also
the double hammer down releases of Hammerbox and
Hammerhead, which perhaps are the cream of the handyman
crop. Hammerbox is Numb and Hammerhead is an Ethereal Killer.
The harder of the two is the Head, with a driving, pounding har-
monic attack. The Box, on the other hand, has a crunchy dilithium
grunge, tinted with pleasant female vocals that haunt in an electric
blues phase shift... That grade
