When it comes to gettin' air, there's nothing like skyin' at 30,000
feet, Mach 2 and beyond, pullin' 7 Gs. The hitch is, that kind of air
can only be found in the cockpit of a state-of-the-art fighter jet and
the only way you're gonna find yourself behind the yoke of the real
McCoy is by volunteering to go to third world countries, meet new
people and kill them. All this in the name of protecting our valuable
economic interests... err, protecting our democracy, y'know, the
American way of life. Freedom, and all that.
An alternative route to afterburner aerials can be found on your
friendly computer. Home video games do a decent job with flight
simulators, but it requires the raw power of a Mac or PC-compatible
unit to fully empower the experience. This month we scramble three
excellent simulators that feature fully-3D polygon animation, multi-
ple viewpoints and full-on dogfighting action.
Falcon MC
FLYING CIRCUS
World War I is the setting of Red Baron by Dynamix for the PC/Mac. You
have a choice of classic fighters (like the Fokker triplane), legendary adver-
saries (such as a pre-Nazi party Herman Goering) and memorable missions
(from defending London, to bombing Berlin). This package gives you total con-
trol over the amount of realism you think you can handle. The excellent manu-
al weighs in around 200 pages with over half devoted to the history of WWI and
military airpower. While it's not necessary to memorize the whole thing, it's
addictive reading and you may accidentally learn a little history.
The Spad 13's engine growls as you prowl the sparse clouds 5,000 feet
above the northem front. Your mission: scout and report troop movements. Not
that a glint of red you saw through the hazy clouds? You yank the stick hard.
and pull your rickety craft into the blinding sun that cracks out over the cloud
coverage. Again a red flash. Suddenly a hail of bullets and a scarlet spectre of
death passes by. Baron Manfred von Richtofen himself! You reach for your
Spad's twin Vickers machine guns and pray you don't stall in the half loop...
squadron back-up this time. You shoot a nervous eye towards the horizon. Was
CAT FIGHT
One World War later, Hellcats Over The Pacific by Graphic Simulation for
the Mac, puts you in the cockpit of the Navy F6F Hellcat, a powerful machine
that compiled a dominating 11-1 kill ratio in its tour of duty in the Pacific. In this
package, you fight to control the Solomon Islands from the decks of aircraft car
riers and land on bases throughout the islands. Study the supplied map and get
to know the terrain, because they're your only means of navigation besides a
compass. You may come back to see the bow of your shattered carrier slip
under the waves and a trio of satisfied Japanese Zeros humming homeward.
Consult your fuel tanks and ammo supply to determine if you have the luxury
of vengeance. If not, try to find a nearby friendly field to put down in.
Hellcats features incredible dogfighting, excellent visibility (a major factor in
aerial combat) and the most fluid animation around. Barrel roll into a half loop,
then break into an Immelman and nose it down towards the impending white-
caps of the Pacific, only to pull it out at the last second with your six Browning
M-2 machine guns rattling. The package includes a reprinted version of the
plane's original tech manual for the purist who seeks to master the machine.
There's even an update set of new missions set in Leyete Gulf.
AFTERBURNER BLOWOUT
Falcon, by Spectrum Holobyte, for the PC/Mac, is the senior player on this
circuit. The first version was in 1984 for the Japanese MSX system. In 1987,
Falcon came out for both the Mac and PC with a focus on authenticity and
unique head-to-head competition that's also feature on the latest versions.
