SAN JOSE Med from page 420
living in the area had an effect on your style?
Some. Have you ever lived anywhere else? New
York for eighteen years. How old are you?
Twenty. How did you like New York compared
to San Jose? All the cows and the farms were
pretty fun to skate. What skaters in the San
Jose area have influenced you? Todd
Prince, JJ Rogers, definitely Kendall, just the way
he's all smooth and stuff. I try to be like that, but I
can't. Gershon lands everything. He ollies cars like
nothing. We took him to the fence today where
there's this fifty foot ditch that everyone ollies and
he just allied it 180° like nothin'. Amazing.
GERSHON MOSLEY
How long have you lived in San Jose? About
six years. Has living in the area had an effect
on your style? Yes and no. When I travel, I leam
more tricks. When I come back. I just skate. Have
you ever lived anywhere else? Yeah, I lived in LA
for most of my life. How did it compare to San
Jose? It was pretty cool, but I didn't really skate
when I lived there.
STEVE CABALLERO
We're here at Steve Caballero's house. Is that
a cellular phone over there? It's just a plain cord
less phone. I know you want to talk about music
so let's just get to it. What's up with Shovel
Head? We're going to go into the studio and work
on a six-song CD that we might put out ourselves.
But if anyone else wants to put it out for us,
they're more than welcome. I play bass. And we
play hard rock. What's up with all of the old
skaters from your generation that are from this
area? Most of them have mellowed out on skat-
ing. Well, to tell you the truth, I don't know where
they're at. All of the people I used to skate with
have pretty much all quit or moved away or got jobs
doing other things. I just pretty much hang out
with the younger generation right now. Does that
keep you on your toes? Yeah, but it totally frus-
trates me right now because I'm trying to keep up
with these guys and it's really hard. Sometimes I
just want to say, "Fuck this." But then other times
I just got stoked just being around these kids and
skating with them. Can you do the noseslide
nosegrind combination? No. Neither could I.
But I try. It just seems like it's taking a little bit longer
to learn a trick than before. I think I had a lot more
guts back then. Okay, do you ever notice a trick
will come in and it will be trendy and it will get
taken to it's fullest and then it'll be played
out? Then either you decide to learn that trick
or you decide to shine it and if you shined it,
it's like you didn't even lose anything because
the trick is now gone. Okay, I'll tell you one
thing. I'm so far behind, I don't know what's in. Let's
say I tried a trick and they go "Oh, that trick's cut,"
I go "Okay, well, let me see you do it right now' and
if they can't do it then it's not cut. Maybe they
landed it accidently once a long time ago, but a per-
son has a trick wired, totally, that's maybe cut to
them, but if they can't do it then it's not cut. You can
make an old trick look good too, just by doing it bet-
ter than someone else. By doing it faster or high-
er. It's gotten a lot more competitive between all
of these young skaters, but skating today seems
like it's not all that fun because no one really makes
anything. How about that Crazy Eddie charac-
ter? He's rad. He's fuckin' way bad. Are you still
Into riding and collecting motorcycles? Not so
much collecting anymore because you can never
have enough so you
always want more so
I stopped collecting.
Kind of like sex?
Yeah. Any last words
or comments? I just
want to say thanks to
George Powell for stick-
ing with me for all these
years. I read that Trans
World Business News
thing and I think that Henry
Hester just doesn't have a
clue of what's going on. Just
because he doesn't like the
way skaters dress doesn't
mean it's killing skate-
boarding. Fashion has
always been there and
always will be and if he
doesn't like it then he
should get into some
other business. I just
want to say to the new gon-
eration of skaters that they
should skate more and do
less vibing and concentrate
on getting their tricks wired.
Amen.
SHAWN MANDOLI
Tell me about the specs,
dude. What's up with
those glasses? They're
round. How come your
parents didn't pay for you
to go to the dentist? Your
teeth are jacked. We're
going soon. Are you
going to get some
braces? Hopefully. I
heard you're rollin'
major babes. Yeah, you
know me. Are you a vir-
gin? I'm no virgin. Do you
think all of the skating
gossip is full of vicious
rumors like that? Yeah. Do
you like small wheels?
Yeah. They rule. Why is
that? Tell me the good
thing about small wheels.
They're lighter. They're fun.
Do you still have your own
brand of wheels? Yep, I got
a whole lot of them. The
Gunderson cheerleaders,
what's the best cheerleader
out of that group? I don't
know, they're all good. So,
do you like cheerleader
chicks? Yeah, I like all
chicks. Fat ones. I guessed
you'd know about chicks if
you ever had one. Have you
ever kissed a girl besides
your mom? Yeah, I kissed
my step-mom.

SEATTLE ued from page 49)
What's in?
Danny: Madonna's pussy hole. Chad Vogt
graphics. Big jeans, pumas. Smoke hella
joints, 40s. Alex Nameroff is in. He's one
of the most inverted invert skaters there is.
Leigh: Tagging's out. Graffiti's fresh.
Danny: But seriously, Snoop's gay. He's
seriously gay.
Huy: Mank's in.
Danny Mank's the ruler.
Leigh: Marcardo Mark Hubbard, Roger.
Danny: You ever heard of Mank?
What's his story?
Leigh: That he saws off the noses of his
boards. Tattoos himself, fucks up.
Danny: And drops in darkside on vert
ramps.
Leigh: Yeah, and does total sasplant to
darkside drop in
Danny: He's gnarly, man. Does face high
indy airs to lock-up, still makes 'em. Big ass
66 wheels, tight trucks. No nose, big tail.
Mank's in. Tom Peha's pretty fresh, he's
been skating forever. He's hella good.
but I never see him.
What about Matt Galardo?
Leigh: Galactican.
Danny: I don't know, he's just twackin'. I
see him at Mikey Ranquet's ramp with
slippers on doing eight-foot high airs.
Leigh: I seen him at Granny's with long
johns and moccasins, and no shirt or
anything doing super high airs and then
falling. He had a big brown butt from
Masonite.
You guys ever ride the freight trains?
Danny: No. Mank does though.
Leigh: Mank made a 2x4 sidecar to for Nels
motorcycle all the way to the Turf.
Danny: Boxcar Willie, that's what they call
Mank too.
Isn't there a guy named Willie who
skates down at Westlake?
Leigh: Yeah, he looks like Orphan Annie.
Danny: He's a really good graffiti artist,
good skater with a good attitude.
(Willie Baxter would get arrested for
skating later that afternoon at Westlake
and taken downtown after he wouldn't
give up his board.)
So what you're saying is there ain't
nothing in Seattle besides the
grunge scene.
Leigh: There's nothing.
Danny: That's why in the winter most
just leave and go places. But you're
always stoked to come home whether it's
raining or snowing or what. It's rad to
get home. That's why it's fun to travel,
go to California, it's all nice there. I think
people here aren't as lazy. I've known
hella people in California that get all lazy
because it's nice every day. It's nice to
go out and skate all day.
Leigh: The Metro building is rad to skate
though.
Is it a bust?
Leigh: Sometimes. We skated there yes.
terday.
Danny: The cops are pretty much faggots
up here.
