            NOTES
from the Underground
All aboard the next train to Skaville. This
here train don't take no haters. This here
train don't take no fakers. I am your
conductor, Judge Roughneck, please
have your tickets ready. Hey you, Rude
Boy, are you bothering that fine lady?
On with you son. These boots were
made for stompin', as you will find if you
so return. Ahh, listen to the rhythm of
them wheels rolling on the rails. That
sound will cure what ails you. It reminds
me of the smooth waves of Delroy
Wilson, now there's a man who know
his groove. But you young riders don't
want to hear about old school ska.
Let me ask you, what happens when
members of The Specials collide
BAD MANNERS
EDONKEY SO
head-on with band mates of
The English Beat? Whatever
it is, it's soon buried under a
dogpile of bodies. That's
what happens when anyone in The
Special Beat trips or falls, according to
vocalist Ranking Roger. Those who call
the latest wave a "ska revival" can be
counted among the clueless, he says,
because ska has always been around.
Besides all the skankin', the scooters
and the fashion, the idea of unity is con-
tained within the very name two-tone,
which is synonymous with English ska.
Guitarist/vocalist Lynval Golding, for-
merly of The Specials, says. "You can
never talk too much about ending racism
and bringing people together. Look
what's happening in Germany and
Yugoslavia. You'd never think you'd
see mass graves in 1992." The Special
Beat took their show on the road
across America in support of their Live
album, with forever favorites like
"Concrete Jungle, "Monkey Man" and
Too Much Too Young" done up in full
energy output. Ska don't mean noth
ing if it ain't played with punch. When
Let's Go Bowling throw down a skank
movement, rest assured it's a doozy,
Music To Bowl By is a tightly produced
ska party that captures clean and mys-
terious rhythms in the finest rude boy tra
dition. The horns, vocals and bouncing
organ of songs like "Dance Some
More" start to become almost too
clean, but then along come tunes like
"Rude 69" and "Pin Stripe Suit," which
roll with a dirty downtown hom choir and
strut a mean and tangled walk
Rocking ska the hard way. The Rudi-
ments bounce a 7 called "Mamacita

that shimmys a raw throbbing beat. On
the flipside, the explosive "Pathfinder

glare, deranged spy guitar leads and
melodicus mayhem... The Skeletones
take the A-Train and add a skankin' beat

"It's got a lot of soul in it," says trumpet
player, lead singer Jonas Cabrera. "No!
necesarily James Brown funk-soul
stuff, but a lot of soul in that it's the stuff
we believe in. We play hard and let it all
out, and afterwards, everybody feels a
whole lot better". The Selecter be
jamming but they also be saying that we
can all live together in this world. Guitarist
Noel Davies says, "The whole two-
tone movement was founded on the
ethic that we play up-tempo music that
you can dance to, but it's also com-
menting about what's happening and

making you think. A good slice of pop
music doesn't do that anymore, which is
very annoying. It's become very corpo
rate. But don't fret rough riders, The
Selecter is back and Our On The Streets
with a live recording from The Tic Tac in
London and the lovely vocals of
Pauline Black providing a smooth and
downright luxurious edge... An OG
ska man from the beginning, Desmond
Dekker is the real deal. He came from
Shanty Town, Jamaica, in the sixties
with a voice that cuts through the dark-
ness and shines with the light of
redemption. Rockin' Steady is an essen
tial collection that contains haunting
hits like "Israelites" and "Fu Manchu"
Let Judge Roughneck tell you about a
group so new they don't even have a
record contract. They be known as
CFB and their demo tape is called La
Muñeca, not because of what it means.
but because they like how it sounds.
Singer Jake Bronstoin says CFB com-
bines "hella different shit, anything you
want." Beyond the traditional ska and
into a deeper darker tunnel, carved out
of solid punk rock. Right now the band
is deep underground, but send $2.00 10
57 21st Ave, SF, CA 94121, and bring
their cassette to light... Ladies and gen-
tlemen, keep calm, don't panic. This
here train has just been "Hijacked." Early
ska man Joe Gibbs has taken control of
the locomotive, accompanied by soul
stirring guitar grooves and a few well
placed horn blows. But Ken Parker is
here to tell you 'It's Alright with a voice
as sweet as Sam Cooke. Trust me,
mlady, we'll soon arrive safely, but be
wamed this train is set to land in Cuba.
