Why are
wheels so
small? Why do
they wear out
so fast? Why
are their riding
surfaces so
skinny that
they get flat
spots on the
first ride?
The answer
is hype.
Miniscule is
the market
trend. If wheels
were bought by
the millimeter,
they'd cost
about $4.30
each. Instead,
skaters pay the
same price for
a 37mm as
they used to
pay for a
66mm. Sure,
small wheels
are lighter and
easier for
some tricks.
And no doubt
many kids just
want to do
tricks and don't
care about
going fast. But
what about
those who
crave speed?
Where are they
to turn? Over
at the Burnside
Project, at hills,
pools, parks,
banks and vert
ramps around
the world.
skaters are
crying out
"Give us bigger
wheels!" You
know it's bad
when you have
to push for
speed down
a hill in San
Francisco
The snail pace
stops here.
Attention
wheel compa
ny owners
everywhere:
Stop letting
greed stand in
the way of
speed, give us
bigger tires!
