LANSDOWNE
SKATEPARK
Lansdowne, MD
Scott Johnston
dices a double
kickflip over the
main hip at Lans
downe. Built in the
70s, the park went
out of business
before it could
open due to an
accident. But the
main concrete
bowls remain.
There is some-
thing there for
everyone, if you
can find it.
Dead Serious Product
Two years ago, skating was in
the dark ages. Boards were tanks
and funky shapes were cool. Pointed
noses, concave, sadplant notches
and tri-tails were tried and all failed.
Now the market has thinned out and
the bunk is gone. While the old
schoolers say, "I can't ride those fip-
per decks," the bottom line is: If that
was all they had, they would get
used to it mighty fast. Where is
skateboard design going? Decks will
be thinner and longer (8 x 33), as
well as stronger to take the abuse of
massive air and gaps. Trucks will be
lighter and lower with baseplates
designed to make noseslides and
nosegrinds easier, and the width will
go back to the mid-140s. Wheels will
have wider riding surfaces to dis-
courage flatspots and be poured with
longer-lasting formulas, but the price
will stay the same. All boards in this
month's column have the same
13.75 wheelbase. I cannot predict
the future, but I know where we have
been, and the future looks brighter
for skating than the rest of the world.
Grind King trucks: Light, good
turning, no-hang kingpin. One axle
with no-slip caps. Hollow backside
similar to Indy, with a cut-away plate
and buff design. Strong and killer...
Newest from World is the Shiloh
Greathouse. The Big Brother cue is
lean, but the Shiloh feels longer
when it's thinner. The all-over paint
feels like a slick. 32.25 x 8.35, 6.75
nose, 6.0 tail. Plan B is out in front
and many are chasing. The new Sal
Barbier is my fave. The lowrider pic-
ture slick has all you need in a skate.
Great shape, hard wood and a slick
that don't peel. 32.25 x 8.75, 7.0
Patrol
nose, 6.0 tail. After a long wait,
the second Sluggo slick from Real
is here and stronger than ever. While
they were trying thinner laminates in
the past, the newer Reals are hard
and strong. 32.25 x 8.75, 6.25 tail,
6.5 nose and it's got a big front end.
It's here today, here tomorrow...
Koklieb is one company under one
roof-the San Jose Skatepark. Mr.
Stinky himself, Simon Woodstock
has the second model from his boss-
es. Corey and Andy. The Peanuts
rip-off painted yellow, it is 32.0 x 9.
7.0 nose, 6.0 tail. The tail end is total-
ly pinned, but it was light and com-
fortable. How bout the next graphic,
a bunch of hippies in a field? Also
check the JJ Rogers, it's a slick that
kicks... New Deal makes wheels.
called Low Profiles. A hard 99 and
small 42 make them their best yet.
The minute riding surface may mean
flat spots, but they are fast and
smooth. Danny Sargent has a new
cue that is hard as hell, all-around.
functional and cool lookin' to boot.
This slick is 32 x 8.50, 6.5 nose, 6.0
tail. Newest dealer, Ron Knigge has
hit the ground running with a shape
that is long and lean. The wood top
is 32.25 x 8.5, 7.0 nose and a 6.0 taill
The Firm's latest is the Joe Gru-
ber slick. Bitchin' slick with perfect
shape, minimal concave and straight
edges. 32.25 x 8.75, 6.75 nose, 6.0
tail. Hey kids, keep skating and writ-
ing. Jake Phelps, Thrasher, 1303
