NOTES from the Underground
When the lines between sleeping and driving fade to grey on a
steep mountain highway at 4:30 in the morning, only the finest
tunes will do. Anything less than rockin' glory is crash and
burn city. Delivering the juice past the three hundredth mile
marker, Hollywood grinders Motorcycle Boy provide punk-
infused soul relief from white line halitosis. "We're very influ
enced by 1977 punk rock," says bassist/vocalist François
"We've basically been doing the same thing since back then,
still playing that chainsaw punk rock sound that we all dug
when it first came out." Fighting their way up through the Hol-
lywood club scene, Motorcycle Boy never paid to play in a rip-
off muck den that makes bands sell a set amount of tickets to
break even. "I'm not going to carry my amp for free." says
François. "Why would I bother? The thing's heavy" The Boy's
Popsicle Lp belts heavy riffs and foot poundin' rhythms with
haunting reverb mixed by producer Sylvain Sylvain of
New York Dolls fame. Sylvain told the Boys some great
Johnny Thunders road stories, says François. "In junior high
school, he and Arthur "Killer" Kane had Johnny in the bath-
room and turned him on to pot. The next day Johnny was in
there with a five ounce bag he had just purchased," François
said. "When he found something he liked he really got into it
Some things are best left alone, especially the horrors of
heroin. Rest in peace Charlie Ondras from Unsane and
Stephanie from Seven Year Bitch. They were casual users
who got hit with something harder than they expected. The
people and their music will be missed... Santa Cruz super-
tanker Blást is under full steam as a streamlined three-piece.
Mike Neider slings guitar and sings, Bill Torgerson bashes
drums, and David Densmore thumps the bass A tour is
underway and new material is in the works... Sloppy Sec-
onds doesn't agree with much of the worthless fodder getting
passed off as punk rock, so they call their tunes junk rock.
"Call me old-fashioned, but if you can't hum it, it isn't a song."
says drummer Steve Sloppy. The extreme and absurd ring
through the anthemic melodies on The First Seven
Inches...And Then Some! "We're not really a political band,"
says Steve. "If we feel trod upon by something, we'll sing
about it, but we're not out to wave any flags. Society's fucked,
everybody knows that." Look for the Seconds on tour with
Poison Idea... New Model Army marches on with History

...Cory McAbee bellows with the power of an operatic bari-
tone to a calliope of melodic punk in a San Francisco club
experience called The Billy Nayer Show. Dressed in suit and
tie, Corey commands the stage, singing twisted and surreal
sices of life and occasionally whipping out an autoharp. Drum
fiend Bobby Lurie (alias Bachelor Bob Bachelor) is the ear
of the Show, while guitarist Yuri Graganavitch balances dis-
tortion with exotic rifts that coincide with the hard pumping
lines of Lee Valenski on bass. Billy Nayer has now released
its own Bunny King Ep and is working a string of bizzare
videos including: an animated short called Bily Nayer: The
Cartoon, a deranged children's book cartoon called My Face
a video project with Simon Michael of Simon's New Blue
Diamonds and Buck Naked of The Bare Bottom Boys
called Man On The Moon, and a slick flick called the Ketchup
and Mustard Man that McAbee describes as "a cross between
The Elephant Man and Chuck E. Cheese." But don't be
deceived. "It seems like we're more film makers than a rock
band," McAbee says. "But
we are a rock band, damn
it." BNS Productions,
