Skater: Donger.
dead, long live Brad. Art director Ken
McGuire has left Thrasher to sail the seven seas
and MacMuscleman Brad Dosland has taken
control of our pre-press operation. Ken blurred
the lines between photo, design and production.
He also introduced the insane one-frame
sequence (by the way, we vow to never use our
computers to alter a photo or make an air look
higher or a slide travel longer or a board flip more
degrees, etc). Brad will lead us into the depths of
the dry darkroom and send Thrasher's pages
directly from brain to press via modem and
satellite. What's another quarter million in
scanners, hardware and video capture
equipment? Heavy stuff? Maybe, but if you get
into the big time world of professional gonzo
skate journalism, those are the terms. Hey, it's a
tough job, but somebody's got to sit at the
keyboards for sixteen hours a day and pump this
shit out. Just ask copy editor/typesetting chiet
whipping boy Brian Brannon. And he still makes
time to enjoy all the free wine, women and song
till two in the moming.
Focus on our skate photographers (see
portfolio page 35), led by the fearless BK. These
guys lay in the gutter for up to six hours taking
bail sequences of some pro who'd rather be
shooting video. Then the guy focuses his board
4 THRASHER
before they can get the shot and they end up with
zip. Or at a contest, the skaters get so crazy it's
impossible to follow them with a monster zoom
lens and keep them in focus. Plus, you could get
a sunbum. Ouch.
Notoriously, the job of a skate journalist is ex-
tremely rugged and life-threatening. Nobody
knows this more than Jake. First there's all the
handshakes, vibes and product promo to deal
with. Then, if you actually get to the contest
before it's over, you have to write down the only
accepted name of each guy's tricks. Then stick
around while they figure out who won, write that
down and get your notes and interviews back to
your desk intact so you won't have to remember it
all five weeks later on deadline. All the time
knowing any kid at the contest could reel if off like
a horse track announcer a year after it happened.
My job, mainly, is to come in about once a
month and write this column to remind us that it's
all a bunch of bullshit and the only thing that
counts is the skating and you readers out there
who pay our salaries. And publisher Ed Riggins,
he just answers a few letters each month from
angry parents who are threatening to burn his
house down. The usual.
