Talking
BY THE
SEAT OF
OUR PANTS
Some of our best
ideas, articles and photos happen
when we are backed against the wall,
behind deadlines and just about at the end of our
rope. If what I say holds true, then these are
creative times here at Thrasher. In the modem
world surrounding us, it's nearly impossible to ever
"catch up." It's ten times more work to put together a
magazine, or run a small business (or even
personal business), than it was a decade ago. The
pressure to be up-to-date, on the tip, with the very
latest acquisitions money can buy is tempting.
Yesterday's news is history and you're already
behind tomorrow's times.
Skateboarding is no different. It's hard to keep up
with the latest tricks; equipment is changing every
day; and now there's the fashion question. It's easy
to "look like a skater if you ride every day. An
oversized, found and hand-me-down wardrobe is
naturally sweat-soaked, filthy, torn and ugly. But if
you have to buy the look you're bummed when it
gets tom and wash them as soon as they get
stinky-all of which means you spend less time on
the bottom line. It's no surprise when people quit
skating. Either they can't keep up with their own
board or they get vibed for not getting down and
dirty. Better to get into mountainbiking or blades,
where you can wear spandex and fly sunglasses
and keep your hands clean. Something you and
your girl- or boyfriend can do together on those
go do it weekends. Solutions: there are none. But
in this issue we get a lot of help from our readers in
Photograffiti where unknowns get photos in the
mag. And if you're clothes conscious, don't miss our
Love N' Haight, spit swappin', britches and bitches
fashion feature-your key to cool.
