GOING OFF
Skateboarding is now
poised to go off big time.
Bigger than ever. Bigger
than the Beach Boys in
the sixties. Bigger than it
did when urethane was
discovered in the
seventies. Bigger than the street wear
explosion of the eighties. The nineties
will blow all that shit out of the water.
You know why? Because of the skating.
The skateboarding being done today is
more progressive than ever. More fun
than it's ever been. Exciting. Creative.
Positive. The passing of each new day
is as mind-bending as the last. Excess
baggage is being cast away. It's come
back to the raw metal. Skate. Grind.
Speed. Normals cannot comprehend it.
Pedestrians should get out of the way.
200 kids out at EMBarcadero on a
sunny weekend and there's not much
anybody can do about it. A street
contest in Golden Gate Park played to
about a thousand and it was a lot of
things to a lot of people, but it was
definitely not boring for anybody. This
issue shows the diversity of our skate
culture, the vibrancy, the street smarts,
the energy in skateboarding today.
Riotous times these days. Last month
the shit hit the fan as we were going to
press. I feel the only thing to come out of
the King verdict riots is that fat politicians
will use the video footage and drag it all
through their election year lies. In SF
and LA, the skating has been good
because the cops are busy. Both cops
and politicians are running scared
because they just witnessed the power
of the people and the people are pissed
off. I expect it will be a long hot summer
in the big city. See you in the fall.
