NOTES from the underground

also includes a

the audience can

Charlie Beer, "We're
anti-techno. There's
no sequencing at
our shows, every
thing is live. We
make up for it by
hitting everything
twice as hard."
Why does a band Ike Allen Sex Flend keep playing after so many years?
'Because nowadays there's so many shit groups around playing all the same
old crap," says Von Skeletal Hivehead gruff vocalist Nik Fiend. "It's not even
as good as it was in the seventies. Unike most pre-programmed radio drib-
ble, says Nik, "We give it everything we've got, and if we drop dead doing it.
it's okay, because we re not waiting for the party afterwards." Open Head
Surgery conveys the Fiend's sonic experimentation for home listening with
Tarzan jungle calls, Nk's fiendish cackle and driving, primitive rave boogies.
The vinyl is delicious, but the chaotic live shows are where it's at. "It's freak-
out city," says Nix. We want to do the bollocks for you. To the delight of
censors and communist witch hunters everywhere. Abernative Tentades is
celebrating its hundredth release and thirteenth year. Virus 100 contains six-
teen bands, including Didjits, Alice Donut, Faith No More, Napalm Death.
Nomeansno, Sepultura and L7, all doing covers of Dead Kennedys songs.
Sure hits include Les Thugs beautifying "Moon Over Mann," and Disposable
Heroes unwrapping "Calilomia Über Alles." Says Tentacles generalissimo
Greg Werckman, "We really didn't want to do it as a tribute album, we just
did it for fun. Diehard Social Distortion fans rejoice, rumor from Casbah
recording studio in Fulerton has it that Mike Ness and the boys recently re-
made "Maininer to be released in its full glory as a b-side to a single off
Between Heaven And Hel Engineer Charles "Chaz Ramirez also reports
that SD has purchased the posh old Hotel California tour bus that once
belonged to The Eagles. Like they say, "Life in the fastlane'surely make you
lose your mind. Dawning of a New Error is the ultimate DOA collection
Thirty-three tracks of unmitigated fury from the 1978 Disco Sucks Ep to the
1985 Let's Wreck The Party Lp prove DOA has more punk in its middle finger
than most of the candy-assed rich kid poodleheads of today have in their cos
metic bags. Word is, DOA have reformed as a three-piece that rocks as hard
as ever... Prolific solo slasher Jeff Dahl has no need for sterile perfectionist
altitudes in his music. "Mistakes are honest," he says, that's part of music. If
you want to make computer music that's okay but that's not what I want to do
Dahl jams with friends or musicians he admires and pumps up the volume.
On his latest album, Wicked. Dahl's guest list includes Dave Nazworthy from
Chemical People and Down By Law, Jamie Pina ex-Chemical People,
Tony Cadena and Rikk Agnew from Adolescents, and Melanie Vammen
from The Muffs and formerly from The Pandoras. The tunes are rough and
edgy punk rock that ring with force and feeling. "I keep telling people this kind
of music isn't brain surgery, it doesn't take three years to write a record," says
Dahl. So far, the tattoo-ridden motorcycle riding DJ Burns Band has done
alright, as evidenced by their rolicking rocker Wasn't That You? The cover art
for said record features a chick with five tattoos of boyfriend's names all get-
ting crossed out. According to the band, Cream thought it was degrading to
women and refused to review it, but the concept was borrowed from a Nor-
man Rockwell poster of the same thing happening to a sailor. "Did they call
it degrading to sailors when that came out?" asks guitarist Jeff Bums. Gui-
tarist Jonnie Z wishes every girl had all the guys she's slept with tattooed on
her arm, "You could imagine some girls looking like a newspaper"... If some-
one says the songs all sound the same on Supersuckers The Songs All
Sound The Same, they obviously can't appreciate fuzz punk psychochunka
bility with upfront and distant megaphone vocals... Names mean nothing
when a band named Flop can make a consistent album of bouncy uppity
rolling pop and sill rock the house. "We're not taking ourselves all that seri-
ously," says bassist Paul Schurr. We're pretty concerned about having the
music come out. As far as having the big rock star atitudes, that's not for us."
The album & The Fail of the Mopsqueezer takes Flop bops like "Circus
Freak" and "Morton the Venereclogist and lays them down in a sea of sugary
harmonies and assertive guitar. On the techno side of the live versus com
puter music battle stands The Final Cut featuring Detroit DJs Anthony
Srock and Joe Lafata. "Samplers when used property are a pretty cool
instrument in making an overall record," says Srock, it's the equivalent of
somebody taking your art and making it better." Consider the dark and angry
Consumed Srock says a pre-recorded DAT was used on Methodical Virtue"
because the song has intricate keyboard runs that were too busy for anyone
to play. But the band balances technology with the human element, including
Chris Connelly from Revolting Cocks, William Tucker from Thrill
Kill Kult and Pigface, and Ogre from Skinny Puppy. "We have two
guitarists and a bass player,' says Srock "Our show is
about as live as it gets-Brian Brannon
