Dear Uncle
Burly...
Sensible advice on
sensitive problems
Do risers make a difference on flat ground
ollies? How do I improve my olle kickfips?
Rodger James, Houck, AZ
Hey Rog, risers make your deck higher
off the ground so it is harder to hit your
tail. Realistically, the lower you are to the
ground, the less effort it is to hit the tail.
So the answer is yes. As for kickflips, the
word is practice.
SNAKEPARK
I am 13 years old and have skated for
three years. Recently I've been skating the
mini-ramp at San Jose Skatepark, but every
time I try to drop in, older guys always snake
me, even when everyone's had a go except
me. What in the hell should I do about it?
Anonymous, San Jose, CA
Snakes are everywhere. At thirteen it's
hard to get rides, but if you find times to
go when it is less crowded (early Sun-
day), or during the week, usually there is
nobody on the mini. Perseverance and a
little balls will go a long way.
LUCKY LAD
I'm a fifteen year-old skater with a prob-
lem. My mom skates more than I do. She is
38 years-old and is as good as I am. When
ever I come home from school she is riding
my board on my mini. My question is what
can I do to get my board back? Son of a
Skate Mom Sydney, Nova Scotia
Well now, here is a good question. The
answer is to get her to buy her own and
both of you can thrash together. If my
mom
were a skater, I would be stoked as
hell. I mean, how many other people can
say that their mom is rad and when you
beef you won't have to go far for her to
kiss it and make it better. If more parents
skated, they would realize how fun it is
and also how hard it is. What better way
to keep an eye on their kids than to build
them a ramp? That way they know they
aren't out causing trouble.
SAD DAD
My stepdad sucks. He's always riding me
and giving me shit. I skate most days and
go to school and get okay grades, but for
him that's just not good enough. If I didn't
love my mom so much, I would probably run
away. My question is, what can I do to keep
this dickhead off my back and keep my
home-scene reasonably even-keeled?
-Tony. Gary, Indiana
Tony, I myself come from a broken home
and this situation is all too familiar to me.
To
be honest, if you love your mom you
will have to let her do whatever she
wants. If that includes a dickhead boy
friend/stepdad, you will have to live with
it. I suggest that you take some time to
explain to her that, although you don't
see eye to eye with her, you will try to
live with it, and him. As for the stepdad,
tell him that blood is thicker than water.
For you, just be thankful that he isn't
your dad.
