            BARRETT From page 46)
How about now?
Everyone. Gonz and Julian, Tom
my, Jim. They know more because
they're not locked into what some-
one else is doing. There are all
these kids out there who try to dress
like someone or try to act like some-
one. The funny thing is, the little
kids are trying to be like someone
who is trying to be someone else.
Individual style used to be more
of a factor.
Totally. Cardiel is a complete mad
man. And you can tell it was him
from 300 miles away, in fog.
How often and where do you
skate?
Every day, at some point, I skate.
The other night I went out at mid-
night and ended up skating Mac-
Donald's parking lot because there's
so many things to skate there. I
skated there for about an hour and
a half.
How do you learn a trick?
Well, I try all different ways of
doing it, and if I put my mind to it
and say, "Okay, I'm going to land
this in three tries." I'll end up jinxing.
myself because I won't do it in three
tries and then I'll get pissed and
then landing it gets further away.
Usually it just happens. I'd been try
ing pressure flips since November. I
learned them in San Diego at the
tradeshow.
Anything bother you about the
Industry?
There are too many certain classi-
fications of skaters right now. You're
either a slash-dog, old school, a
whippity or a vert guy. It lost just
skating. I'm bummed that other
aspects of skating are lost in the
shuffle. Some of the funnest ses-
sions you can have are on some-
thing useless. That's what skate-
boarding is. A cement bench is so
worthless, but it's fun to skate. You
can do all these things on it.
Do you like being a pro?
I like a lot of things about it, but I
get nervous around people. I don't
like being up on a pedestal like
when you go places and people act
differently around you. We're all just
people who skate, it's no big deal at
all. I can't talk to pros that I have
looked up to for forever, because
that gets in the way.
Some of your favorite bands?
Well, they all came off the Butt-
hole Surfers, that's where it all start
ed. I like early punk-Dead Ken
nedys, Black Flag. Then all these
other bands are doing now, what
the Butthole Surfers did then. I listen
to Jesus Lizard and Scratch Acid.
King Diamond, Pantera and Beastie
Boys, anything.

Didn't you used to have dreads?
Yeah, Frankie Hill's parents
thought I was a runaway from
Philadelphia and they wouldn't let
me stay at their house.
And now people think you're a
skinhead.
I can't win, but why win when los-
ing is so fun?
When did you meet Bill Weise?
About four years ago we had a
tight mini-ramp and we were all
skating it. We had a radio nailed up
to a tree and these Iron Maiden
tapes we had just bought at a drug-
store for four dollars. Ben Miler and
Steve Milter brought this little dirt
ball over and as we were skating
the ramp they were telling us that
this guy just did 540" at the Slug
Ramp, in Allentown. We couldn't
believe it. Then Sean went there
with him and he's like, "Yeah, he did
540. Bill Weise is a lunatic. He'll
do anything, try anything. He wants
to kickflip the four stairs at Wahlen-
berg. The last time we were both
here, he ollied the three. He's gotten
a lot better on street. Tom Boyle,
Sean Miller and Darren Menditto.
are the three most powerful vert
skaters I've ever seen. They do
every single trick
Are you a coffee fiend?
If we go out for breakfast, I like to
have at least a cup of coffee down
before the food comes then relax
with a couple cups after the meal.
What's the best place that you've
travelled to?
Europe. Just to go there, see
things and skate. I went with my girl-
friend, and we were on our own,
and to get to contests we had to fig-
ure it out. We got frisked on the train
and I didn't know what was going
on. We figured out the train had
originated in Amsterdam and when
we got into France it was just a bad
scene. I was whistling and the guys
are like, "Stop whistling!"
While in France, I jumped off a
mountain with a parachute in the
Alps. That was crazy.
What's your view of the world?
The one thing that bothers me
about the government and the envi-
ronment is that the whole recycling,
water conservation thing that is put
on the public as a guilt trip. The big
corporations are the ones that have
more waste and what are they
doing? We really don't know what's
going on with them.
Anything to say to any skaters
who are totally into staying with
the sport?
Don't get wrapped up in the way
things are getting so one-sided right
now. You shouldn't worry about
what other people are doing and try
to mold yourself to that. Just try to going to get it on a global level.
get a little bit of everything.
Any closing comments?
You just have to have fun.
NEUHAUS/m4)
that moment, I became complacent PSL CONTEST
and stagnant. I thought I had
reached my goal in skateboarding
and I couldn't further myself any
more. When I realized that I wasn't
keeping up with the progression of
skateboarding. I had to make a
drastic change; and that entailed
getting in my car, driving to Califor-
nia and doing whatever I could to be
a part of the scene. I realized if i
was going to be a part of skate-
boarding. I had to be where the cen-
ter was. I just got in my car with my
friend and left. We lived out here for
a few weeks, then he had to go
back but I stayed. I lived at peoples
houses. I got hooked up with the
band Fungo Mungo and stayed at
their house for a few months and
that's where I established myself.
For those first couple months I
had to do it for myselt. I wasn't get-
ting any help from anyone other
than my parents, and it was really
fortunate they were there for me.
Ron was always supportive, but he
didn't have the means to support
me. I focused myself, got rid of all
the excess, and got straight into
skating. I figured, if I'm going do it,
this has to be my main focus, and I
can't have any other things around
me. I reached the point where I've
found residence here at the office.
Do you read?
I'm reading this book called Bar-
tholomew about a spiritual warrior. A
guy is re-living and learning from his
past life, like once you pass on from
this life, there's a lesson for every-
thing that you've done in this life.
Every direction you turn, there's
something to be learned.
What are your future plans?
Teaching everyone they can have
fun. They don't need to be in com-
petition with everyone to be skate-
boarding it doesn't have to be elite.
Everyone can just enjoy it for what it
is, we're all human beings. We have
too many things in common to sep-
arate. I'd like to get us together. Get
this world in shape so it doesn't
shoo us off like a fly. Right now.
we're kind of ruining it for ourselves.
Do you mean as skaters or as
human beings?
Skaters, on the small level, but
human beings on the global level.
Skaters ruin it by putting all these
judgments on people like, you do
this,' or 'you do that.' Who cares
man? We're all on skateboards.
that's how you get your kicks, this is
how I get my kicks. If we can't
appreciate that, then we're never
(From page 36) bailed on basics
that you know he can do), Mike
blasted fat ollies, stale to rail and a
huge method fakie that had every
one holding their breath. Add the
Vallely style and you get the picture.
Hailing from Diamond Bar, CA,
Josh Swindell slapped and blunted
his way to fourth. He was cool and
collected right into the finals. A first
trick tailgrab to tail got Josh enough
speed to tear through the course
with frontside blunts, alley-oop clie
late big spins and backside 50-50
down the handrail. He stayed on
and his bread was buttered.
Dark horse Jose Cerda entered
on a whim and took home third.
This guy made almost everything.
including lengthy frontside sliders,
big 360 airs, alley-oops on the big
quarter and torqued frontsides over
the box. He turned many heads and
in his first pro contest had people
asking, "Who is that guy?"
Kareem Campbell saved the best
for last. In qualifying, he looked like
he was somewhere else, but he
turned up the heat in the finals.
Kareem lets his skating do the talk-
ing, and it went something like this:
frontside ollie late shove-its, nose
blunts, frontside airs and large olie
tail slaps. He came alive at the right
time and almost won the contest.
Practice makes perfect, and for
Chet Thomas that was the way it
went. Rumor has it that he had
been there every day working out
on the course. And he made it pay
off, big time. Chet was the only one
to wear pads, because his shit was
so nasty: monstrous 360' indys,
alley-oop lien melons, big spin back-
side disaster reverts and on the roll-
in he did a sweet frontside ollie late
shove-it. Chet was on fire and that
makes two wins in six months. So
right now he is in the hot seat, but
what with being a thousand dollars
richer, he doesn't mind.
