man on a mission, Simon Woodstock, skated
his straight-arm style all the way to sixth. A pro debut
with butt sweat to match, Simon could do no wrong
He put together a lethal midure that had the fans on
their knees crying for mercy. His line included double
kickflips to fake on the big bark, bluntslide master-
ship and an unbelievable olie off the quarter-pipe to
frontside adle stall on the spectator bench to 180°
ollie off to rock to fakie that defied logic. If he relaxed
a litte, he might have placed higher, but we love ya
anyway Simon.

The NSA came back to Jacksonville, Florida, on
March 29 to hold the arnual Spring Nationals vert
and mini-ramp contest at the old Kona Skatepark.
Kona's primered steel mini-ramp has a spine, an
extended flatbottom to a twelve foot wall and six feet
of vert. Lipside moves were difficult and the surface's
fresh paint was very slick
Saturday warm up started around 11:00, with
Sergie Ventura first show-up followed by what looked
to be Right Said Fred, or maybe it was the Gulwing
Team. Then Hosoi started ripping, doing boardslides
from high to low off the vert wail, and many other
interesting moves. In a bizarre accident Christ tipped
over someone's board coming up the ramp and rolled
head over heels across the platform, under the railing
and off the ramp for a six-foot drop. He took a six-foot
fall, flat onto his back. This injury put him out of both
contests. Shortly thereafter, Buck Smith followed this
trend by breaking his ankle coming down the vert
wall. The surviving pros went on.
On Sunday. Mike Frazier was the first to show. He
heated up the vertramp until it was glowing red.
Soon enough, the ramp was packed. Twenty minutes
later, just as the ripping started to rear, a light rain
pissed on the ramp. The skaters didn't seem to mind
and kept on skating undi Bostick postponed the con
test until the rain stopped. Aber fifteen minutes, the
ramp was dry and the sessioning resumed. The con-
test was to start at 1:00, but the skaters wanted more
time to warm-up, and the judges were all off skating
in the park. Twenty minutes later the contest got
underway. Here's a recap:
8th-Adam Luxford: backside Smith shuffles, take 50-50 takies.
backside ole tailgrabs, fronts de stalefish and backside disasters.
7th-Mike Crum: nose blunts, frontside one-loated tailgrabs, 50-50
backside disasters, en melons to rail and olle nose-blunt talgrabs.
6th-Sergie Vemura: Cab tall-grabs, alley-oop nose grind lipslides,
nose blunt tallgrabs, slob Benihanas and lots of stylish highairs.
5th-Brian Howard Cab pivot backside reverts, half-Cab muregrab
noseslaps, backside disaster reverts, melon fakies, mute tailbones.
4th-Neal Hendrix was fun to watch, his runs consisted of: backside
5-0 reverts, hall-Cab melon nose slaps, len melons and frontside
nose-bone disasters.
3rd-Mike Frazier was ripping the hell out of the ramp with frontside
270 olie front truck to fakies, backside tal slides, backside air to rail
reverts, 5-0 to fakes and frontside ole tailgrab nosegrind reverts.
Heaving frontside allies,
Tom Boyle (top) was on his
way to victory-this "Rock"
rolls hard. Tony Hawk
(above) won the mini
event and landed a close
second in the vert via the
Sen bender approach.

PRIM-2309
2nd-Tony Hawk pulled an assortment of difficult
moves: frontside blunts, 360° indys, half-Cab varia
munegrab nose slap, nose blunts and 5406
1st-Tom Boyle was skating long and strong:
frontside alle late-shove-its, fingertips-to-lakie
frontside blunt slides, frontside olle to pivots, backside
lipslide reverts. Aber Tom's last run, most of the skaters
were slapping their tails like beavers on the coping and
yelling to cheer the marathon man.
After the contest, the vert ramp was open to non-
contest skater Jen O'Brien from Team-Glug and two
youngsters who were going over five feet output on a
ripping show. Contests are great places for young rip-
pers to watch, meet and hook up.
