TEN YEARS AGO IN THRASHER
In an attempt to catch up with the ever-spinning
world, we make our first double-month issue. May and
June 1982 are covered at the same
time with Stacy Peralta on the cover
and interviewed inside. Stacy lays
down some history while looking
toward the future with lines that are still
valid like: The great thing about skat
ing is that you can do it anywhere, any-
time, in any style," and, "It's like Nixon
being drunk and wanting to push the
nuke button." He is a spokesman as
well as a skater, something few have
ever done well. Famous speed
freaks tell of memorable hills and close

TALK
Baseball and
skateboarding are
on a collision
course. From the
very beginning
skating has been
an outlaw sport
and now with ama
teur contest like
the lite leagues
skateboarding is
rapidly becoming a
favorite for parents
and organizers
ake Go to any
contest and you
will see parents
frothing at the
mouth while video
taping little Johnny
going off on his
skateboard The
reason skate
boarding is cool is
because it is so
non-structured
Team sports like
baseball and foot
ball have coaches
and parents
breathing down
your neck. That
sucks. Some par
ents even go so
far as to fight other
parents in the hys
teria involved in of
youth competition
while living out the
fantasies that elud
ed them early in
their lives
Contests are cool
when everybody
gets together and
throws down some
gut-wrenching
skating but when
the pressure to
succeed from par
ents and team
managers is the
focus of the ener
gy then the real
loser is skate
boarding Talking
of skating like it is
an Olympic sport
is ridiculous. How
could anyone
judge something
that comes from
the soul?
Gymnastics can
be judged because
it has established
tricks and routines
The way skating is
progressing, the
sky is the limit
Let's keep skating
in the streets and
the backyards
where individuality
is the key
