Contrary
to popular belief, vinyl sin-
gles are not dead. They flourish
among the scattered independent
labels that sprout like weeds be-
tween the cracks of the corporate
money-grub machines. Fans, col-
lectors and people too stubborn to
replace their Close 'n' Play tumta-
bles keep the single scene alive
and proliferating. There's a per-
verse joy in throwing a 7" on the
turntable and hearing the worn
needle scratch through the
grooves beyond neighbor-recom
mended volume levels. Better to
buy three or four good singles than
one band's CD with teen outs of
fuff and only one decent song...
Teriyaki Astma is a Seatle tradi-
tion of four-band compilation 7"
singles founded by C/Z Records
chieftain Daniel House. Past
attacks have included Nirvana,
Babes in Toyland, Coffin Break,
Hellos
Creed.
Frightwig.
Hullabaloo.
Alice Donut and
L7. Reportedly, the
name describes the taste.
of too much dirty LSD at a
greasy Chinese restaurant, washed
down with half a bottle of Ripple.
Tenyaki Volume V features a brash
double vocal diddle with grunge-a-
plenty by Jonestown, raging lighter-
flicking guitar and quadruple kegger
vocals à la Gas Huffer, an electric
dirge by Porn Orchard and a tight-
wound bassful of riffs, funky drums
and wah-wah guitar by Daddy Hate

music to barl by. The
band started in 1984.
with Leighton Veezer
on bass and Ed Fother
ingham behind the
mike. They were soon
joined by Mark Arm on
drums and Steve Turn-
er on guitar (before they
formed Mudhoney).
The Thrown-ups have
put out numerous noisy
singles to the delight of
hunters and collectors. Fotheringham
says, "All of these singles have been
extremely limited editions and now
they're worth a lot of money, which is
funny, because we made it as bad
as possible to see it people would
buy it, and they did." Also on
Teriyaki Vol. VI. Olive Lawn
delivers a terse message to the
youth of America: "You're a Dick
and I'm Gonna Kill You." The
Pain Teens cast a migraine mist
of provocative howls on "Come
Up And See Me Some Time"
and Unrest concocts a groov
ing instrumental of syntasia, low
rumbles, vibrato guitar and wel
toned bass. The Diesel
Queens are currently being sued
by Orchard Supply Hardware for
trademark infringement over the
single of the same name "We told
them to go fuck their mothers," says
guitarist Mister Friction. They told
us we'd see them in court." The tune
is an inspired ode to the handyman
machismo etched into the translu-
cence of clear vinyl. The sounds of
power saws, drils and other heavy
tools spew forth during a break to
emphasize the manly image the
Queens maintain. Tough as they are,
the band likes to dress like women.
"After band practice we break up in
groups of three and rummage in Viet-
namese garbage dumpsters," says
Friction. "The clothes are really small

who loves to hate, G.G. Allin, cut a
tricky slab of blood red vinyl with
Uncool, Unclean, Unacceptable. This
7" is carved backwards so you have to
play it from the center out. It's tough to
fool the turntable into spinning the first
songs, but every repulsive word is

clear as G.G. lays it
down in full guttural
glory. Superball
63 hammers fast
and serious punk
with a garage edge
on "Get" b/w "Red
lined." "We like
songs that move
along" says bassist
Scott Hull. "We
don't want to stick
on one groove for
too long, we like to
get it across and get
the hell out."
Venison from Wis
consin is into really
grisly murder stuff.
"Shredded Skin" and
*1-5-91' are the type
of gruesome death
cookies that this
band dotes upon...
"Gonzo's Revenge"

Hunter S. Thompson

tric love, don't call
DMG a psychedelic
band, says guitarist

wouldn't want to be
categorized as a
that, because peo
ple would mix us up as a sixties
revival
Large Hardware rends
severe hardcore in a light vein with
comprehensible vocals and blue vinyl,
including a turbo-prop version of The
Rezillos 'Head Kicked in" and a vocal
cover of "Batman" with cosmic stereo
Smash! Bam! Booms!... The Look-
outs bust the type of upliting chorus-
es that got punk going in the first
place. Their four-song single. IV. deliv-
ers sold Berkeley-grown vocal punk
with a fast and lively beat... Dual
spychunka-chunka guitars wailing like
sirens at 3 am, drive "Pressure" b/w
"All" by Yard Trauma. Bassist Lee
Joseph says "Alibi" is about mass
spraying of pesticides to curb the
Mediterranean fruit fly... It's a Mod
Showdown pitting Mudhoney against
Halo Of Flies. Mudhoney does the
scocter sound right with "She's Just
Fifteen," but "Jagged Time Lapse" by
HOF takes the prize with a deeper.
darker resonance of fuzz and rever-
berating animal calls.
