4 THRASHER MAGAZINE
SORE LOSERS
Every few years, Thrasher receives a
wave of letters, faxes and calls from
preachers, messians, soothsayers and
guilt-infested shop owners with claims
ranging from "This time you've gone to
far," to that old favorite, "Let's take skate-
boarding to the Olympics." They sound
like your typical tirade from shocked par-
ents, except the complainer usually has
some kind of stake in skateboarding.
Occasionally it's the old bitter pro, whin-
ing for anybody to hear before he settles
into his non-skating life ("Maaan, we used
to...blah, blah...kids these days...
blah...blah"). More likely, it's somebody in
the "business" whose sales aren't quite
what they were during the gravy years
and now payments are due and the wife is
pregnant. Or, the aforementioned shop-
keep or known businessmen, who has
taken everybody's money for decades,
now feels the only thing he owes in return
is his over-the-hill conservative and totally
out-of-touch opinions on how things
were, how they ought to be and how it's
time to lift skateboarding out of the gutter
After seeing the most recent rash of
complaints, threats, subscription cancel
lations and prayers, I took an extra long
journey through my library of Thrasher
back issues to clear my head. That nostal
gic walk through the past made me realize
something all of the above types tend to
forget. Namely, we like being in the gutter
Skateboarding does well down here.
There are no high standards to live up to
There are no perfect tens. Go with the
flow or bang your head against the wall.
Do whatever you want. Skaters like to
stay up late, get dirty, prowl around, go
fast, talk shit, hang out and show off. It's
youth at it's best. If you're unfortunate
enough to have grown up, make the best
of it or shut up
Another thing I saw in all those back
issues made me wonder what all the fuss
is regarding what we should or should not
publish. When the dead cat flew at Mile
High ramp, we ran the photo. When
skaters rode empty pools naked, you saw
it here. When we found a kid who could
barf on command, we got the sequence
and ran it. Or how about ads? The young
greedy tycoons of today have nothing on
Indy's "Built to Grind." Tracker's "Crutch
Sweeper" or the Santa Cruz/Roskopp
"Nubile Spreads."
Hey, in the final tally, all I can say is at
least I know my mom still loves me.
Keep those cards & letters coming.
