Record weather and large crowds
welcomed NSA's Back to the City II
street brawl at the San Francisco.
Fair over Labor Day weekend.
Looking out over the Civic Center
reflecting pool-turned-wooden reser-
voir before the finals of Back to the
City II, it was anybody's guess which
of the twelve practicing pros would
take it down. In the end, two cap-
tains of the new guard, Danny Way
and Omar Hassan, battled run for in-
credible run to a photo finish. Omar
took the $1,400 check after leading
qualifying, leading going in to the
finals and winning it going away. The
incredulous Way, was only one 360°
varial from getting the victory him-

The earthquake that rattled San
Francisco in 1989 was nothing com-
pared to the hordes of skaters that
rocked the city of hills and cable
cars for Back to the City II.
"Oooh, Mom, I want a burrito with
head and tongue and brains," said a
gringa girl in the foyer of El Taco
Loco, deep in S.F.'s Mission district.
The foolish child was only joking, but
plenty of customers contentedly
chowed on those very things.
Outside, a dual percussive rhythm
bounced off the sidewalk and be-
tween the buildings. Two ragged
street ragers, Jerry Fasdel and Larry
Matzo were headed for the NSA Back
to the City Il festivities in the empty
reflecting pool in front of San Francis-
co's City Hall. Their destination was
downtown, amongst the vagrants,
yuppies and exotic sex shops.
Heading down Ninth Street, in the
cool shadows of tall buildings, the
skaters ollied a bum cradling a bottle
