EUROPE
(From page 63) Veterans Steve Caballero and Tony Hawk
didn't believe the hype. They filed their lines with con-
sistency and calm demeanor. The final cut was made,
and a voice on the PA stated there would be a "highest
air competition immediately following the finals.
Soon after dusk, powerhouse Peter Hewitt tore long.
tall frontside allies to Smith grinds, one-footed
frontside ollies and full-bit lien airs to gain a respec-
table tenth. Chris Gentry hovered big indy nose bones,
backside tail grabs, tail grab varials and frontside nose
grinds for ninth. Nicky Guerrero ended up in eighth,
ravishing the finals with olie boardsides, ultra-smooth
tastplants, frontside rock-n-roll sliders and dive-bomb-
ing Indy airs to wind up in eighth. Salman Agah
cheered as his cousin Mike Youssefpour lofted lien
airs-to-fakie, alley-oop "French maid indy airs and
indy airs-to-takie for seventh place. Dropping in from
the extension, Mike Frazier raced through 360 board
varials, stand-up grinds-to-tail, body varials and palm-
grabbed stale fishes-to-tail, supercharging his way to
sixth. Omar Hassan made himself at home with fat lien
crossbones, Madonnas, indy tuck-knee tweakers and
huge stalefish, gaining fifth before he shut the door.
Andrew "Morni Morrison from New Zealand impressed
all with large body jars, fastplants, 540's, one-footed
ollies-to-lakies and backside boardslides, working all
portions of the ramp four a fourth place berth. Danny
Way punched the evening sky with frontside tail grabs,
Japan airs, body jars and backside method 540's.
Way also toiled the lip with backside disaster reverts
and shove-it tail grab nose slides-to-fakie to intricately
position himself in third. The top two slots went to a
pair of seasoned veterans. Many skaters' favorite
skater. Steve Caballero, nonchalantly blasted tail grab
varials, finger-flip Indy airs, one-footed takie ollies,
melons-to-lakies, frontside rock and roll boardslides
and tall grab Cabalierials, receiving second place for
"showing how it's done." Tony Hawk won his third
event during his European vacation. Switch-stance
lien-to-tails, stale McTwists, half-Cab nose grabs, Cab-
disaster-reverts, backwards travelling five-Os and one-
footed nose grab fakie olles-to-reverts put the icing on
the cake.
The night's highest air competition was measured in
meters with the entrants surging heavenward via
assorted methods of levitation. Danny Way went for
the Japan approach. Tony Hawk went mute, Cabaliero
stuck to the backside method and Mike Yousse pour
asserted indy nosebone-to-fakios. After three
attempts, Steve Caballero held the highest with 2.75
meters (equivalent to nine feet). Tony Hawk donated
his second place winnings to the "Mike Yousse pour
air-to-fakie fund."
SUNDAY, JULY 28th - SUNDAY AUGUST 4th
I took advantage of a return trip to Hamburg to skate
the I. Punkt Skateland wooden bowl with cohorts
Wade Speyer and Dave Dunn. We were also treated
to a memorable session at the Wilhelmsburg bricks by
Hamburg local Jan Waage. These bricks had six-foot
trannies that diminished to three feet, in the shape of a
large croissant.
Dave and I visited Frank Messman in Amsterdam.
We skated the Powell warehouse ramps, rode bikes
through the narrow streets, checked prominent coffee
shops and attended bake sales.
At the infamous Bridge Ramp, I met up with Brian
Frostad, who had just begun his solo European vaca-
tion. I caught a train back to Essen for a night's stay at
the Hermanns' residence.
MONDAY, AUGUST 5th
I shared a splendid European breakfast with Alfred
and Elka. Afterwards, we whisked down the Autobahn
to the Düsseldorf airport. On my cramped flight home, I
reflected on my diverse experiences and was glad my
days of living out of a skatebag had come to an end.
Special thanks go out to the Hermanns family, Bernd
Schneider, Yves Enderli, Jan Waage, and Frank Mess-
man for their kind assistance during my travel.
