PORTLAND
From page 35) piled it until we had a
bank. Then we'd dig out the middle
so the gravel formed a tranny. We
would mix the concrete three bags
at a time on the ground, get water
at a nearby fruit distributor and start
laying the concrete at the bottom
and working our way up. As a rule.
Redneck and Couch were the trow-
el pros. It was an efficient work
crew, but, being we all are a little
lazy, we would take any available
opportunity to skate.
Progress slowed as winter set in.
When it got below freezing, we
couldn't use water so we were limit-
ed to shaping the banks. Plus, most
of our work force had disappeared.
Construction on a larger, carveable
corner became a priority, since
none of us likes jump rampiquarter
pipe things. Some poor soul held 1
steel re-bar while they hammered it
in with a concrete block. This part
was real unpopular because
nobody liked shedding warm gloves
to cut with a dull hacksaw or to hold
1" re-bar while some guy swung a
40-pound block of concrete over his
head to hit it. Everyone sported a
bruise from that. We cut the steel
into nine-foot long sections and
beat them into the gravel halfway
for support, then we'd stack the
blocks around that. That part took
about a week because, by then, it
was averaging about 20 to 30' and
with that nice river breeze, the wind
chill could get easily around zero.
In March we started building the
big bank again. Burnside Project
turned into a circus then. Cal Skate
and Sport, a local shop, told every
little kid who came through about it
for status or something, and we
already had more graffiti than we
knew what to do with.
What we were doing is technically
illegal. Everyone officially ignores it,
though, because we keep the trash
picked up and try our best to stop
the spraypainting, window breaking.
and other stupid behavior limited to
those who can't skate and have no
brain but want that cool-guy image.
The police come by and shoot the
shit with us every day, and we
openly admit we built it. Fact is, no
one would park their car under the
bridge because it will get stripped in
about thirty minutes by the locals.
The Burnside Project is built on a
parking lot for a hotel that has been
abandoned for years and is now full
of homeless people (who also
helped us build). The city has fore
closed on the building and plans to
tear it down and will probably build
some yup-mart on our skatepark.
We've been damn lucky so far,
though, and we will have more time
to ride as long as long people learn
that graffiti is for kooks. Working
with concrete is worth the extra time
and money. It's superior to skate
on, and chances are they're not
going to carry away your new jump
ramp or your neighbor won't level
your ramp. You can always modify
the trannies, and it's there until you
pay someone to bulldoze it.
We are continuing to shape up
the place until they tear it down. It
you're in town, come to the east
end of the Burnside Bridge. It's a
gathering spot for easily 50 to 60
skaters a day. We have some pools
in the works; maybe we can give
you a tour of our great city. Just
leave your attitudes and your spray-
paint at home.
G.G. ALLIN
(From Page 68) realize that the reality
of the show is not pretty. Then they
disappear, which is cool, because I
hate people and I'm a loner, so
that's just fine with me."
Allin has jammed with everyone
from the original MC5, to the gui-
tarist and drummer of the Plasmat
ics, who visited G.G. in prison and
wanted to form a band. Allin says, "I
don't have to surround myself with
other names like the Plasmatics, so
I told them to take a hike; I can do it
myself. People like Jello Biafra and
Henry Rollins are on that whole
rock star trip-Jello doing $1,500
speeches from a podium, and
Rollins on the road with Jane's
Addiction. Big fuckin' deal. Anybody
can talk about being real, but let's
do something about it. I've been hit
in the face with barstools, I've bro-
ken just about every bone in my
body and I got blood poisoning four
times during the last tour. Let's see
them top that!"
People are drawn to G.G. like
bugs to a buglight. He has been
heralded by his legion of fans as
the Evel Kneivel of the 90s. "People
look at me as a daredevil. It's the
danger element that draws people
to my shows. I think skaters skate
for danger and do it just for the
thrill. They don't worry about break-
ing any bones: they do it for the
danger outlet."
Allin was recently paroled from a
nineteen-month prison term for set-
ting a fan afire at a Michigan show.
He contends that is the reason he
moved the date of his originally
planned suicide on stage. "Due to
some stage-related legal matters, I
have postponed my suicide until
October 31, 1992. I will commit sui-
cide on stage. That is where I live
and that is where I'll die. Even when
I'm gone, my mission won't stop.
My records, my words, my books
will come out and create a path for
people to follow. I have started
something I must finish. I believe in
death. -Jon Stain
