RICKTER SCALE
Didjits, Full Nelson Reilly, Lp. Here's the
fourth album by the boys from Illinois.
Power-packed rock-fest of full till energy
These guys can't put out anything bad. If
you want blood, you've got it... Mer
cury Rev, Yerself is Steam, CD. Some
thing different for those who seek obscu-
rities featuring a member of Flaming Lips
A lot of different influences create a
deranged trance-like noise which weeps
into oblivion. A fine debut... Halo of
Flies, Big Mod Hate Trip, 7. Hey, a new
single by the ever so infamous meisters
of filth. Super mod medley A-side with a
regurgitated B-side Jawbox, Gripe, Lp.
New Dischord release by one of the best
bands I've seen live lately. Harmonious
vox with catchy guitar equals the new
D.C. progressive sound God &
Texas, Industry Standard, Lp. This is a
mix of Husker Dü and Dinosaur Jr. Lots
of energy, swift, driving and consistent
... Sugar Shack, 7. Throbbing metal
madness from Houston that bows to no
man. I don't mean metal in a wimpy way,
it's just the way it should be played. Just
as mandatory as their first single...
Plague, 7" Delirious Ohio punk four-
piece. They're on some crazy Swedish
label. I guess they're too good for any
American label. Uncompromising HC
Slint, Spiderland. Lp. This second
release stars former Squirrel Bait mem-
bers. Hailing from Kentucky, murky back
woods eerieness, good for easy listening
but there is one stomper on it. A fun
record The Pineapples, 7" I was
really surprised with this one. They had a
song on a sampler I thought was okay,
72 THRASHER MAGAZINE
but the single rocked me. Cool guitar
sound, melodic vocals. Basic but neces-
sary Cows, Peacetika, Lp. This has
got to be the ultimate Cows release to
date. Not as trashy as their past stuff but
very garagy... Ugly Americans, Overkill
Tour, Ep. Sampler. Featuring four of the
well-known Am-Rep bands. Tar and
Surgery have the tough songs on it
while Helmet & God Bullies are a little
laid back. Very limited pressing and unre-
leased tracks. Sludgehammer, 7
Melodic vocals with wanton licks of havoc
from the Pittsburgh area. Best I've heard
yet... 1000 Home DJ's, Supernaut,
12 Don't let the name influence your
buying habits. This is Ministry under an
alias Yeah, it's the Black Sabbath cover of
"Supernaut" done with precise chord
strokes. And the cut "Hey Asshole" is
beyond God... Circus Lupus, 7 Ex-
Ignition members made my day. Two
solid-state tunes that'll keep your engine
purring Chunky guitar, thumping bass,
great lyrics and a girl drummer Rein
Sanction, Broc's Cabin, CD. Neil Young
meets Dinosaur Jr. They're on Sub Pop.
they have a cool name, and they're from
Florida... Operation Ivy, The CD. Yes,
it's time for a classic-punk-released-on-
CD-review. It's all here. The Energy
album, the Heretic 7" and Turn It Around
7 compilation, remastered, of course, for
digital clarity. Pigface, Gub, Lp. All-
star cast of members from Ministry,
KMFDM, Killing Joke and Revco. Alterna-
tive industrial madness from some of
today's finest. The CD includes the 12 Ep
End Point, 12" Midwest HC. A
straight-edge holocaust that strikes with a
vengeance. Pretty colored-vinyl
Swell, CD. This
SF quartet is on
the rise after re-
leasing their first
Lp, which has been
remixed onto disc
format with bonus
tracks. Cloudy and
enigmatic observa-
tions of cosmic
rhythm slow-drip
through the mind
Codeine,
Frigid Stars, Lp.
New on Sub Pop is
this gem. A good
change of pace the
name fits this pre-
scription strength
brew of slow and
grinding tunes of
pleasure and pain
Guaranteed good
for the soul
Flour, Machinery
Hill, Lp. I liked half
of the stuff from
Flour's third release. A little more techno
than prior albums, but just as entertaining
been the birthplace of some legendary
bands, like Septic Death and Tad, the big
man. Three members of State of Confu-
sion make Treepeople, who are now
based in Seattle. A good mixture of hard
Seattle rock with that definitive Idaho art
punk... Claw Hammer, Lp. Premiere
pop punk from L.A. that's worth investi-
gating. Reminds me of Anus the Menace
and early generation So. Cal. influence
Also featured on The Big One comp...
Creamers, Dead Weight, 7" After a big
signing with Triple X, the Creamers are
back with a vengeance. They have their
own pop punk style and great female
vocals, which make the difference....
Motherlode, 7. So much to take hold of
from the northwest, and here's another
example. The record doesn't come off as
heavy as they are live, but at least it's dif-
ferent from other bands in the area. Kind
of humorous yet creative folk punk...
Skin Yard, The Bulldog Single, 10"
Sorry for past typos. Skin Yard is two
fucking words. This is every bit as earth
shaking as Fist-Sized Chunks Lp. Jack
Endino (guitarist and mega Sub Pop pro-
ducer) slices through concrete like a jack-
hammer. Pummeling version of the Beat-
Fastbacks, Double 7" One of the les "Bulldog" and "1000 Smiling
Northwest's most influential pop units is Knuckles" are from the forthcoming
back with a double the pleasure, double album. This will handle any hungry man
the fun. Each song starts off with really... Datura Seed, 7 Ex-singer from
krunchy rifts followed by those infamous
high-pitched Barbie doll vocals. Superior
packaging... Citizens Arrest, Colos-
sus. Lp. Basically this only stopped my
heart once-so on the Rickter Scale, il
only give it a 5.5. Unfortunately, they
ended up with a more generic N.Y.H.C.
vibe, which could spell disaster. The 7"
ruled... Volcano Suns, Career in Rock,
Lp. If you're already a long-time tan, then
you'll love this. Trashy, dirty, & rough
mixtures of decadent sludge... Crust,
7. When Richard did the vocals on the
cover of Feelings, he recorded in a field,
nude. Yup, more twisted Texan records
and produced by Spot. Look for the
Church of Crust album soon... Young
Gods, Play Kurt Weill, CD. Masters of
industrial wizardry from Switzerland that
transform live and recorded guitar and
keyboard parts into a unique blend of
electronic sampling. Their latest is a trib-
ute to legendary German composer Kurt
Weill which contains studio versions per
formed at a govt-sponsored Weill festival
Hopefully, these new sonic architects will
tour with Ministry this tall. Mud-
honey, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge
Lp. Gosh, um, let's see-a lile keyboard
("Don't Fade IV") and harmonica ("Poking
Around") for openers. Mark Arm slinging
dangerously with a neo-psyche edge.
Overall this is the best Mudhoney record
ever. What more do you want?... Tree-
people, Neil's Down, split 7 Boise has
Zero Boys Paul Mahern created this outfit
a few years ago. It's gone relatively unno-
ticed but they are on the gain. Modern
power pop post punk signifies this quan-
tum leap as history making... La
Muerte, Kustom Kar Kompetition, CD.
This is like pre-Blitzspeer. Drag strip
anthems of flaming rails of death. The cut
"Speed, Steel and Gasoline" speaks for
itself. These pilots of pain endorse a
bluesy metal sound that keeps them apart
from the mainstream. After numerous
albums like Death Race 2000, this sizzles
like an egg on hot pavement... Morbid
Angel, Blessed Are The Sick, CD. Sec-
ond album of putrid evil by this Florida
filth. Throat-slashing sacraments of
frivolous fury that spread like the plague
and dominate the stateside grind-core
culture... Sepultura, Arise, Lp. Now
veteran Brazilian death masters, Sepultura
will evoke massive hemorrhaging in
cranial cavities. Arise justifies their
progression from typical speed metal to a
more well-balanced diet of various metal
influences, such as Prong etc. Now spon-
sored by Vision Street Wear... Type
"0" Negative, Slow Deep and Hard,
Lp. Rare blood type, really long song
titles and grisly NY style vocals trans-
fused with cataclysmic chords of catas-
trophe supply ample resistance to the
gravitational pull of mountainous metal
madness that wanders our streets.
