SKATE WORLD
SHOCKED BY
GATOR INCIDENT
Richard D. Noll Staff Writer
Vista, California
On May 7, 1991, 24-year-old professional skate-
boarder Mark Rogowski surrendered himself to
San Diego police in connection with the tragic.
death of Jessica Bergsten, a 21-year-old model
from Tucson, Arizona, who had recently moved to
San Diego County. According to the statement
given to the police by Rogowksi, Bergsten asked
him to show her the sights in the San Diego area
on March 20. The time they spent together includ-
ed lunch at an area restaurant, and they later went
to his condominium.
On April 10, a camper discovered the decom-
posed remains of a woman, whose identity
remained unknown until Rogowski turned himself
in to police authorities.
Rogowski is being held at Vista Detention Facil-
ity in North San Diego County. His bail is set at
$1.5 million on charges of first degree murder and
assault with a deadly weapon, to wit: a club. At an
arraignment hearing at Vista Municipal Court on
May 9. Rogowski pleaded not guilty to the
charges. At press time, a preliminary hearing had
been set for June 17.
Since Rogowski turned himself over to the
authorities, local and national media have given
the case extensive and sensational coverage. There
have been allegations of sexual assault and other
misconduct.
Thrasher was granted an interview with John
Jimenez, Rogowski's public defender. Jimenez
said the defense's position is contrary to most
of what has been reported in the media.
"He...did not intend to kill her," Jimenez said.
"The press and the prosecution are taking the
facts out of context. It was an accident."
Mark "Gator" Anthony Rogowski flying
high on tour in Australia, April, 1987. At
the top, winning a pro event in Louisville,
Kentucky, June 1988. At the end of the line,
Vista, California, 1991.
On May 19th, Thrasher met with Rogow
ski, who said he could not discuss the case,
but expressed that what is being said in the
media was not what happened.
The death of Jessica, described by her
friends as a carefree and spirited young
woman, is the ultimate tragedy for the Berg-
sten family.
Though this event is not directly related to
skateboarding, it is without a doubt the most
tragic event to ever have gripped the skate-
boarding community. The skate world and the
vibrant youth scene surrounding the sport
have been undeniably shocked by this
tragedy. It will be a long time before all the
facts are brought to light. It's likely the skate-
boarding world will be placed under a micro-
scope in the media. This has certainly been
the toughest report we have ever worked on.
There can be no positive outcome to this inci-
dent. Let's just hope that we can all remain
strong.
