JAKE'S HOT LIST

WHEELS
Turnel Rocks
Keeping up with the times is getting
harder. The names and faces change while
the companies stay the same. The corpo-
rate angle is to find "new" faces, but often
Blackharts the older ones get left behind. Skateboard-
Alvo Natural ing today is a big business that is always
Red Kryptonics looking for the next big thing. A word of
Yandall Bowl Rolls advice: If you are good enough to get spon-

UFO Saucers much time skating as you have groping for
Road Rider recognition, you could have already been
"pro." If sponsorship is all you care about,
I suggest you take up supercross-the
money is better and they have trophy girls
to hand out checks. I am not down on the
companies; I think they have to keep up

with the Joneses, but I wish
every skater could see the
dark side of contests and
sponsorship. 'Cuz when
sponsorship goes, where
will you go?
CLOWN
Big Top Skateboards, Rt 27 &
Marble St., Whitman, MA 02382
Big Top is another new company
that is trying to make a buck in the
big world of skateboards. The ride is
nothing out of the ordinary and the
shape is simple; it has a blunt nose,
semi-rounded tail and a nice con-
cave. The best thing about this
board is its large nose. It's 32.25"
long, 9.5" wide, with 6.75" of tail and
a 6.125" nose. I found the board to be on the heavy
side but a good effort by Big Top.
REAL SMALL WHEELS
Real Skateboards, PO Box 881914, San Francisco, CA 94188-1914
Real is a company with some big ideas and some real small wheels.
I have mentioned before that "the smaller the better" mentality is
prevalent in today's market, and Real is the first to go to the micro
53mm. They will also give you six for the price of four-what a real
deal. These are not recommended for large ramps, but they are fast as
hell and slide like ice. They come in 99, 97, and 95 so there must be
urethane for you in there somewhere. Where there is a deal there's
Real. Watch for the 51mm. Yes, 51mm.
LUEVRE GLOVES
Luevre Gloves, 11831 Kingston Pike,
Suite 136, Knoxville TN 37922
Right now there is somebody think-
ing up "the most revolutionary product
for the skateboarder. This month's
angle goes like this, a wrist guard and
glove combined. Well, the end result
has crossed my path. While I did find
them well-constructed and functional,
they took some time to break in. Take
the plastic out for that oh-so-punk
look. The suggested price is $29.95,
which is not much when you think about the doctor bills from a good orthopaedic surgeon. If
you crave the safety, Luevre gloves are right down your alley.
ERIC NASH
Sims Skateboards, 4401 Soquel Dr., Soquel, CA 95073
Sims is back in black; well this board is red actually. Eric Nash is always sending me his latest cue, and to be honest this '91
scratch-off is the best yet. I think there were some problems with the Sims name and they went underground for awhile, resur-
facing under the N.H.S. tent. This new board is highly functional and features a mid-board rocker bend for that lowrider feel to
it. The double kick and nose make it functional from either end. I measured it at 32.25" x 9.5" with either 6.25" or 6.75" nose, a
simple 6.5" tail and either a 14" or 14.5" wheelbase. Also recommended for destructive youth is the larger Disco Stick, which I
ride daily. It's 32.5" x 9.75" with either 6" or 6.5" nose, a 6.5" tail and a very small 13.75" wheelbase.

SMILEY-GUY
Take Skateboards, 202 S. Prairie, Bloomfield, MO 63825
Take Skateboards. Never heard of them? Well neither did I till
they laid down their line for '91. While I can't
say they are great, I will say that they are try-
ing and that takes a lot of guts in today's mar-
ketplace. The shapes are pretty functional but
I think they've got some older blanks from
which to cut. The nose is not as kicked and the
tail is much steeper than needed. Take should
take a look at what's being built and ridden.
Measurements: 32.5" x 9.25" 5.5" or 6.25"
nose, you choose, a 6.5" tail, add to that a
minimum 15" wheelbase. Hey, take a look,
maybe this is right for you.

CHUCK DINKINS
Walker, 1365-A S. Patrick Dr.,
Satellite Beach, FL 32937
I talked to Bruce Walker, who wanted to let me
know about their new Chuck Dinkins slab. I was
happy to hear from him, 'cuz you
never know what is going on back in
Florida. Well, he wanted to say that
this is not Chucky D's everyday load
but it is a streetsicle. I ride it here.
there, and everywhere. Numbers are
as follows: 34" long, 10' wide, 6.75" of
tail, a choice of 6.125" or 6.625" inch
nose, and another choice of a
16.125 or 15.625' wheelbase. (Dink-
ins model was pictured last month
mounted with XT-Wheelz.)
Powell and Peralta's newest
pro model is the Lance Conklin.
P'n' P is making a run for
your money with some of the
tops that won't stop. Of the
shapes that I have seen from
them, this is the most up-to-
date. In the past I have ridden
some heavy, sluggish wood
from Powell-Peralta, but this
deck is solid as well as light.
Numbers as follows: 32.5" x
9.75" with the obligatory 8-
hole front
5.75" or
6.25" nose.
I can't wait
to see the
new Hawk.
Next month: New Deal decks and
some stuff you may or may not have
heard of. Until then, asta la vista.
