ASK THE DOCTOR

This month we're going to
delve into something a little
different. During my travels I
moet and skate with many
big name skaters and hot
ams. These
guys will oc
casionally
ask the Doc
about some
thing that's
bugging their
brain. Every
now and then
I include my

questions
from a few
top skaters
I'd like to
start with an
old friend of
mine who's
been skating
as long as I
have and sw
rips it up every day. Steve
Alba. While we were on-
gaged in a serious pool ses
sion, Steve wondered out
loud why there were so many
pros today who either don't
deserve it or haven't really
paid any dues.
Good question, Steve.
I've also noticed that every-
body and their bro is a pro
these days. I think it has to
do with the fact that so
many more people are
skating now than when we
were skating in competi-
tion. More skaters, more
sponsors, and more pros.
There's also a lot more op-
portunities to enter a con-
test series than there was
during the California-led
skate boom of the seven-
ties. The amateur contest
scene throughout the
Warehouse World is turning out able
in San Jose skaters from everywhere.

As far as those who don't
deserve, if you're a spon-
sored skater and you don't
produce for your sponsor,
you are outta there, espe-
cially at the top pro level.
As they say, "It all comes
out in the wash."
Here's another question
from a hot skater named
Jade Corn who lives in Ari
zona. Jade asks, "When are
people going to get back to
skating vertical. It seems so
many skaters are into street
these days."
When you start skating,
where do you start? Usual-
ly on the street, your drive-
way, a banked parking lot
or any smooth paved area.
Some people now call this
street skating as opposed
to other types of skating.
like ramps, pools or pipes.
When I started, we didn't
categorize different types
of skating. We knew if you
skated, you
were proba-
bly a skater.
And, if you
were known
as a good
skater, you
definitely
rode pools.
and vertical
surfaces.
So, as more
people took.
up skating
and the num-
ber of pools
declined,
street skat-
ing became
more popu-
lar because
street skating can be done
anywhere and at anytime.
But vertical takes more
effort and requires a mix-
ture of skill, courage, and
style. Finding terrain, even.
good ramps, is not easy.
With more kids skating
street, the level of skill has
increased tremendously.
Basically, some guys are
totally hot street skaters
and have no desire to skate
vert. This blows my mind
because the ultimate thrill
of skating is getting weight-
less on vert. Street skating
is where you learn and vert
is the goal. A lot of top
street skaters are already
getting that urge to attack
and conquer ramps and
pools with the confidence.
they learned in the streets.
Jeremy Allen, of Santal
Cruz, asks, "Why do govern-
ment and city officials talki
about legalizing prostitution
and dope while they treat
skaters like criminals for rid-
ing down the street?"
When you think about it.
from the cities' points of
view, legalizing dope and
sex makes sense because
they can tax them and
bring mass revenue to the
city. Skating doesn't really
generate capital for the fat.
cats of city government.
People who are in control,
or at least think they are in
control, don't like to see
people having fun on city
streets. Skaters refuse to
be regulated or controlled
and it makes the politicians.
nervous. There is no jus-
tice in skate harassment.
